I have a car harness for Willie. It is essentially a little seatbelt for him, but it can be used as a normal harness too. It clips on to my seatbelt. He only ever goes in the passenger side of the car, never the driver's side. I have tried to have him in the back a few times, but he gets so upset sitting there alone I have to sit with him or he will try anything to get to the front, which is just as dangerous as having him unrestrained. So I usually now have him restrained (which I have always done) directly to my seatbelt on my lap, seeing as I don't do the driving - my flatmate does. I never have him unrestrained. At least this way, he's restrained AND calm.

I agree with you and good for Australia for making it illegal. Lots of people don't like the seat belt law here, but it does safe lives. Granted a dog isn't a human, but what difference does that make when it comes to restraints? Both should be securely restrained in my opinion.

Fortunately, Thor has a very limited grasp of English. He knows Sit, Down, Stay and Speak, but that's about it. Not to mention, his spelling and grammar are pathetic. So I think my secret is safe. Tell Sam and Ollie they shouldn't hold their breath on those bullies!

LOL!!!! Yes, he is a pure genius I think! He discovered this last year and now I really do have to lock the windows because he gets right on the passenger side and down goes the window almost the minute he gets in the car! LOL My little brat! He knows what hes doing too, this is not accidental or coincidental, bc he'll do it in other people's cars too!

NOOOOOOO!

I lock the windows. He does love driving with his head out the window.. but we only allow that if he is on someone's lap and they are holding him by his harness and his back legs. He'd drive on the outside of the car if he could! LOL Once we hit about 35mph though he comes back in, its too windy for him!

I've allowed both of mine to sit on my lap while driving. Its the only way Gwenni doesn't get car sick now. It kinda tricks her system into thinking she's being held I think. We also have a car seat for them as well. It really depends on the situation for whether or not I allow it.

It may not be safe and I know I shouldn't do it but sometimes you do things you shouldn't do I guess. It isn't really a bad comparison. The law that all infants/toddlers be restrained in car seats came about because of deaths from accidents. Any unrestrained animal in a car is in danger as well as being a danger to others in case of accidents. An unrestrained animal of any size can become a projectile in an accident and injury others as they hurtle through the air, not to mention the possibility of death for themself (especially if they are small). Airbags will kill any small animal and possible even a large dog.

I know of one case where a lab was in the back of an SUV with a toddler in a car seat in the back seat. The SUV was in an accident, the lab came hurtling through the vehicle, hitting the child's head on the way - broke the neck of the child (killing them) and then went through the windshield to it's own death.

Please, please, please consider an animal car seat, or at the very least a harness that tethers into a seat belt.....

I know that some people dont think its good but driving with you dog for a while when he is crying and whinning is not easy!!! I drive with bella in my lap or in her crate but the crying becomes really loud when she is in the crate. If someone is driving with me they take bella in her lap and the windows are up.
Its just nor easy to drive with a crying dog!

Tess always rides on my shoulders across my back. If I take more than one I fix up the back of my SUV so they have beds,pee pads, food, water and toys...but that is when I go on longer trips.
