It may not be safe and I know I shouldn't do it but sometimes you do things you shouldn't do I guess. I like to tie their leashes to the headrest so they lay down on the passenger side, or they ride in the back. I just really don't have the room for a dog car seat. We're trying to buy an SUV so we can put them in the crate in the back for driving. |
It isn't really a bad comparison. The law that all infants/toddlers be restrained in car seats came about because of deaths from accidents. Any unrestrained animal in a car is in danger as well as being a danger to others in case of accidents. An unrestrained animal of any size can become a projectile in an accident and injury others as they hurtle through the air, not to mention the possibility of death for themself (especially if they are small). Airbags will kill any small animal and possible even a large dog.
I know of one case where a lab was in the back of an SUV with a toddler in a car seat in the back seat. The SUV was in an accident, the lab came hurtling through the vehicle, hitting the child's head on the way - broke the neck of the child (killing them) and then went through the windshield to it's own death.
Please, please, please consider an animal car seat, or at the very least a harness that tethers into a seat belt.....
