I'm so sorry for your loss. A friend of our's got a felony DWI this weekend coming back from the lake. He had his 10 year old son with him - which is what made it a felony. I sincerely hope that his son's reaction to all of that is going to make an impact with him. He won't listen to any of us about his problem. It could have turned out so much more worse. My sympathies to you and your family (and the other kids families too).

I am so sorry for your loss I am living proof that it can happen to you yourself. I have posted about this before but back in 2002, me, my sister, my best friend and another guy friend were driving home from a church group cookout when a drunk driver who was driving on the wrong side of the road, hit our car head on. My best friend who was driving was killed instantly. I was sitting beside her and both my femur bones (right above my knees) broke and came through the skin (I also had a slipped disk in my neck that wasn't found until 2 months later). My sister had a back injury and the guy had a shattered hip. The drunk driver walked away with no injuries.

I also knew who drove drunk with his best friend in the car who was also drunk. They lost control and both were thrown from the car. He survived with a broken femur bone but his best friend was killed. The friend's family ended up pressing charges and he ended up in jail for awhile.

Needless to say, I am very against drunk driving and wish people would realize how often this happens. Too many people have the attitude that it won't happen to them. I'm sure I thought the same thing until it did. The hard part is that I did nothing wrong. We had to pay the price for the other person's decisions.

A parents worst nightmare.

My oldest are 20 and 19. This is all I say to them, everytime they leave the house. I just hope and pray that they are smart and remember what I have told them.

I'm so sorry you and your family had to go through this. What a horrible thing to happen. It scares me to death.

I will read this to them when they get home. Hopefully your nephews death and the death and injury to his friends will really strike a nerve with them and all kids. (adults also!!!)

Thanks again everyone for the warm messages. I really do hope that by discussing this someone else can be spared this horrible space left by his death. He lived far away from his mother & the rest of his maternal side so we really had little impact on his day to day life. Boy, he sure is having an impact on ours now! I felt I needed to do something so sharing this with you all is helping me very much.

So very sorry for your loss, and I can relate. 13 years ago we lost our 17 year old daughter in an auto accident. No alcohol, no drugs, safe car....car just went off the road at a high speed as it was on the highway. My daughter and her girlfriend. Neither one wore a seat belt. If they had, they both would have walked away. It takes a long time for the pain to lessen, but it never leaves, and you always have that hole in your heart. Yes, it can happen to anyone. We still wonder what if, should, have, could have. Just take it one day at a time, and be there for family members.

I am so so so sorry for your loss. I will definitely be praying for your family and the families of the boys. It is so tragic.

When I was 16 we were hit by a drunk driver. I was with my stepsister and two of her friends - we had gone to the movies and were driving one of the girls home. We had to drive through a not so nice area of of town. We had JUST gotten off of the freeway and were going through an intersection in which we did not have a stop light or stop sign. Out of nowhere this old 80's Lincoln Towncar (the things built like tanks) came speeding through the intersection and T-boned our car. Thankfully we weren't still on the freeway, otherwise the accident would have been a lot worse. Nobody was seriously hurt. The driver has bruises on her arms and legs from the impact and airbags. My stepsister, who was in the passenger seat had a busted lip and some bruise. The girl beside me almost broke her leg and was having severe leg pain. I have permanent tissue damage in my back. The drunk driver walked away with no problems and in handcuffs. It was like her third DUI and she was a bartender coming home from work.

my condolences for all the families involved I too lost a nephew (25), he was drunk and speeding (the officer said 100+ mph), he flipped 4 times and landed in a field with the top caved in, it split his head from the forehead all the way back and broke his neck the police had to retrieve pieces of his head so we could have an open casket. He left behind 2 girls, ages 2 and 8. He was like our own son, he came to Michigan every summer when school got out and lived with us
