Might as well sell the hair yourself right? It really is heartbreaking to hear not all charitable organizations are on the up and up. I have a trunk full of clothes that I want to donate (the most used item was worn twice) and I see a lot of these yellow donation boxes everywhere, only to find they've been associated with organized crime (as a way to launder money). So much for wanting to help.

Wow...it was really disturbing to read that article. My dd and alot of her friends donate their hair all the time to Locks of Love. It is so sad how you really cannot trust that your donations are really going to the charitable cause and not to the business side of the organization . Well, it was a wonderful thing for them to do.

I, too, have heard bad things about Locks of Love (of course after the fact).

Pantene has a program too, but I don't know if it is any better. I thought I'd offer it as an alternative though:

I didn't mind them selling the hair to offset costs, but it sounds like they are making more money than most businesses.

How to Sell Your Hair - wikiHow, because you cannot take a tax deduction for selling a part of the body, it's better tax-wise to sell your hair yourself, and then donate the money to charity, and then take a tax deduction. Sounds like a lot of work though. Have you tried selling it on E-bay?

Seriously, I don't mean to be joking, I was just so shocked when someone suggested it wasn't a legitmate charitiy, and I thought I'd be able to find lots of information to prove otherwise, but the reverse it true. I have not done what I'd call a through investigation.

I have seen people selling their dreadlocks on ebay. It was pretty funny. You can't sell human remains on ebay, but hair is ok. hmm, I wonder how much I, er I mean WE can get for his hair? LOL

Just make sure you read all of the disclaimers, though. Last year I chopped 14 inches of my hair off for the first time ever, and I was so excited to donate it... until I read that you can't have bleached your hair... ever! I was so upset because I really wanted to help and I couldn't because I had bleached my hair 4 years ago! Also, make sure that he tells the hairdresser ahead of time that he wants to donate it, that way they put it into a nice ponytail BEFORE they cut it off.

Sorry this is a little "off Topic" I bring my donations to our public school, I feel like they know the familys that will put our donations to good use. I will also bring some things to my church.

jeanm1963 was the one that first told us, I just was looking for some information to refute it, and couldn't find anything. I guess they probability sold your hair to a wig making company, or maybe it's it even being used for extensions!
