| Thread for frugalistas - Tips for saving money My friend has gotten me obsessed with 'couponing.' Times are hard for some and we all could use a few money saving tips. What do you have to contribute? With couponing, you clip, print, and collect coupons and use them in conjunction with grocery/drug store sales to save even more. Don't know why it never occurred to me before. The girl who is mentoring my friend said she went into a CVS and walked out with 5 bags of groceries ($40 worth) for $8. I NEED TO SAVE THAT KIND OF MONEY! I would to know what everyone else is doing.

| I pretty much shop the bogos only (buy one get one frees) If it isn't bogo I don't really need it until it is It's pretty easy to do once you have a bit of a stockpile. I routinely save 50 to 60% off my total bill

| I've been pretty much shopping the sales. I get the bogo's too and unless I need it, I don't get it. I do stock up some things however, like coffee when it goes down to $5.99 instead of $9 something! One thing that I've noticed...most grocery stores will cycle their sales in 3-3 1/2 weeks time. Meaning, I used to stock up on the sale items and then a few weeks later, I would see the same item on sale again-for the same price! I also try to go on the last day or next to last day of the sales. If you look at what they've moved to the end caps and out on the floor, those items are in the upcoming sales flyers so if I am looking to pick it up, I'll wait til the next day!

| The spray is made by filling the bottle almost full w/ water (I use filtered) add 3-4 TBD Downy liquid (or stuff in a softener sheet) and optionally add 1 TBS rubbing alcohol to help evaporate faster!

| I recently got into serious couponing! I use hotcouponworld as my major source of information. I do stockpiling when I can find stuff for cheap or FREE *I love FREE!* I refuse to pay for health/beauty aid items unless I absolutely need it NOW. Walgreens is my favorite place to shop. In the past month I have gotten several free toothbrushes, free dental floss, 10 free vaseline lotions, several free shampoos and conditioners (Organix and Herbal Esscense), free chapstick... oh yea, and 36 bottles of Sally Hansen nail polish for $8! The polish is going to be in my gift baskets at Christmas. For food I try to stockpile when I can and mainly shop BOGO at my BiLo and wait for things to go on sale and use my coupons for it when it goes on sale. |

| We don't have a CVS around here so I can't say since I'm not familiar with their deals Lately Wags. has had a bunch of sales where you get the full amount back in Register Rewards with are basically like cash on your next order. All month long they'd had the new Vaseline lotion, dental floss, Gillette Fusion Razors, Halls cough drops, chapstick, and a couple other items that were like Free after RR. If you know how to divide up the transactions correctly after paying for the items the first time, every time after that its free from using RR's I got on the previous order. My cashiers at Wags don't mind doing multiple transactions are really coupon friendly. I've heard from other online couponers that their Wags aren't as nice. Wags doesn't use a card system so you can do the deals as many times as you want during the week. |

| I'm bad - I don't do coupons - but I will stock up on sales - esp. meat sales - and I buy a lot of generics if the quality is similar. I never pay full price at Joann's or Hobby Lobby (I'm a quilter)

| I print coupons as well online. This year I have started making my own laundry detergent (I have saved a TON) and I honestly think its BETTER than what it is in the store! Here's how I make it: 1 bar of Fels-Naptha Laundry Soap 1 cup of Borax 1 cup of Arm and Hammer Super WASHING Soda (NOT baking soda) Grate the soap VERY fine and mix all together. This recipe will make 64 loads I think. You only need to use between 1/2-1 tablespoon per load. I usually use 1/2 unless I have a SUPER large or very soiled load and then I use closer to 1tbl. The only place I have found the Washing Soda is at Kroger (I had to call around) - they have all 3 ingredients but WalMart (and most other stores) carry the other 2 ingredients no problem. And this is great for the energy efficient machines as well (b/c its not sudsy). I seriously think everyone should do it!

| Thanks for the washing tip! That's very cool - and I am definitely going to try the homemade Downey spray. But, I have to brag on myself ... I made my inaugural grocery trip using coupons and preplanning the current sale at Kroger, and I am so proud of myself! I got a lot of BOGO meats (Sausage, Bacon, Kielbasa, FILET MIGNON!) and I used a LOT of coupons. I got $115.65 worth of groceries for $69.xx!! I was so happy. Before hand, I went to Walgreens to take advantage of the Slimfast shakes that are on sale for 4.99 + I had a 1.50 off coupon. $3.49! I love slimfast and am always drinking it. (BTW - if you do also, then you can call the Slimfast customer service # and they will send you out coupons monthly if you ask them to!) I have been clipping newspaper coupons, as well as printing them online at coupons.com AND ... I started buying them on eBay! Listen to this -- I got 12 BOGO Subway 6" sub coupons on EB for $4.00 + free ship. AND, I got (30) $3 off any SlimFast product for $3. If I receive those in the mail before the sale is done I am going to stockpile those! I am very excited with my newfound skill of saving! I feel empowered somehow and I love the feeling.

Another thing that I finally started to do is buy a bigger roast and cut it down into 3rds. This way we can still have roasts (I used to never cook them for just the 2 of us) so now I look for the larger pieces so I can get 3 portions out of them. The portions generallyl will run about $2.00 - $2.50 after all said and done.
