A girl I work with volunteers for a wildlife rescue here and has brought a baby bird or two in with her cuz they had to be fed. They two started chirping everytime she spoke to someone.

She's also brought in baby bats and baby opossums.

Kind of cute when they're little I guess, but ewwww.

Wow! I used to have zebra finches too, and hand fed some of them when the parents abandoned the nest. They turned out so tame and so much fun! I know how fast those zebra finches grew, so I'm guessing these babies to be about 2 weeks old. They have pretty much all their feathers except the ones under their wings. Ewww....baby bats...I think not! LOL Opossums we don't have around here, so I don't expect to see any of them in need!

We think alike when it comes to saving these little feathered friends. We have no wildlife rehab around here...I wish we did, and I'd gladly turn them over!

Hi! Your story put a smile on my face! Made me think of Yappy...he was a wren that I saved a few years back. Once I finally released him, he'd sit outside on the juniper tree right next to the garage door to greet me each morning. That next summer, I came out the garage door one morning to find a wren sitting in that tree! I do believe it was my little Yappy!

Thanks everyone, for the sweet comments. The little birds are all still alive and appear very healthy...and hungry! They get to be such a mess with formula stuck to their feathers. Today I took a damp washcloth and tried to clean them up a bit...then took some pictures. They got quite scared when I took them all out for pictures. I am trying not to get them too tame as I want them to have a good chance of survival once they are out on their own.

I have ordered 1000 meal worms from the pet store here. I probably should have ordered 2000. I hand raised another wren once and kept buying all the pet stores out of meal worms. They eat like little pigs! The lady at this pet store will order them for me and charge me their cost, plus shipping, so that should help. I had over $100 into the one wren I raised...yikes...now I have 5! I may have to have a "feed the birds" sale on here! LOL It will really help to get the worms at cost though! They won't be in till Wednesday, so I bought 200 last evening. They haven't yet tasted them...and no...I won't be holding those little worms with my fingers...I'll use a tweezer. LOL

I banded the birds with different color rings, so I can now keep track of them better. Here's pictures. The one with their mouths open is blurry, but will attach it anyway.

One more picture...I thought it was so cute how they were all in a row in the birdhouse. I took out the original nest after they seemed secure with me. I figured there might be bugs in that nest. Now I just line it with cheap napkins...easy to clean!

I am so glad you are sharing this with us. So wonderful of you to take care of these babies. Loved the photos. Will look forward to watching them grow. We have finch around here and I feed only niger/thistle seed so that the cranky sparrows stay away. It is so interesting to watch the babies once they start flying. They're always hungry and nag their poor mommy/daddy to death. Wherever the mommy/daddy flies so do all the babies. Then they line up in a row, with mouths open, peeping. Of course, the parent obliges. Again, thanks for sharing.

I am just sick. I fed the birds this morning and forgot to put the cover on the cage. I went downstairs to take my shower and came up to feed them and only saw 4. I quickly looked and found Maddie and Libby standing over a baby bird and he/she was dead. I feel utterly sick. I don't know how this baby got out because they aren't flying yet...maybe this poor baby decided to try his wings. I don't know which of the dogs got him, so I'm mad at both and they won't get a treat today. The little bird wasn't bitten or anything. I suppose they were playing with him. Darn it...what a way to start the day. It was my fault...I forgot the cover. I didn't sleep much last night and maybe didn't have all my senses. That poor baby died a frightful death. I feel like such a horrid person! That baby depended on me and I let him down.

Aww im so sorry about the baby bird

They must be fledging already...some do it earlier than others. My baby cockatiel that i am handfeeding started to fly at 3 weeks old! caught me by surprise cause i read they do it at 6 weeks and on but he flew very high! Anyway they are very cute...your babies must have thought it was a toy..poor thing. At least the other ones are okay
