| Anyone know about gerbils/rodents? I just thought I would give it a shot and ask on here. I can't seem to find a vet who will look at my gerbil! He is about 2 1/2 years old. His eyes are completely shut and won't open. He is eating and drinking, and chewing up bedding. Although, his activity is slowed dramatically. I'm thinking eye infection maybe. Everyone keeps telling me to give it up, the gerbil is just old. I feel bad though watching him suffer, and not doing anything about it. It just makes me sad. I've taken care of this little guy for over the past two years.

| Awww, I had gerbils awhile ago and when they got sick I called around. A LOT of vets wouldn't see them, but I finally found 1 who would. I believe normal lifespan is 3-5 years, but I could be wrong on that. Good luck. Sorry I can't offer any specific help.

| Well, I finally found a vet that will see him, but I can't get him in until Friday. I don't think the little guy will last that long. Today, he keeps laying on his side and breathing fast.

YT Addict | I had a hamster who had the same symptoms as your gerbil. She only lived for three days, I couldn't get a vet to see her either. She was 2 1/2 years old as well. Does his back end look wet? If so, he may have wet tail... in that case you should let him drink tea. I think that's what my baby had. I'm sorry, even though they are small they are still part of the family. It still hurts.

| Well, I took him to the vet today. Apparently, he was just an old gerbil, and was extremely sick, so we had him put to sleep. RIP Winnie.
