I had a hamster who had the same symptoms as your gerbil. She only lived for three days, I couldn't get a vet to see her either. She was 2 1/2 years old as well. Does his back end look wet? If so, he may have wet tail... in that case you should let him drink tea. I think that's what my baby had. I'm sorry, even though they are small they are still part of the family. It still hurts.
