I've never heard of anyone getting paid for IVF either personally. I would think that people might if they are participating in a study of some sort. I think it is completely unethical for any doctor to implant that many babies, but I have many issues with IVF aside from that. I think this particular case is crazy. Mainly because there was so much effort put into her having multiples. I get defensive and do take it personally because of all of the insinuations that no one can care for more than "x amount" of children. I don't think that people have that right to determine how many children a person can care for. If people are not capable of caring for that many children at one time, I guess everyone is unfit as parents that sends their children to school or daycare since there are usually at least 15 and as many as 30 or so kids in one classroom being taken care of by one teacher, and sometimes a teachers aide. Sure they are just at school, but they are at school for more awake hours with their teachers than they are at home awake spending time with their own parents. As far as people that live off of the state, I can agree to a certain extent, but I don't think you can have someone mandatorily (is that a word, lol) sterilized because you don't feel like paying for them to support their kids. I could understand having people sterilized for giving birth to baby after baby every 9 months thats addicted to crack that just ends up in the foster care system before I can see that. This mother has gotten a ton of media attention. If she is really not caring properly for her children I am sure it will not go unnoticed. I am not defending this mothers actions, but I will not ever want to live in a country where the government can tell me how many times I am allowed to give birth and how many children I can raise. |
Of course she is selfish. I think she definitely shortened the lives of her parents. |

......... this country is NOT going to get any better if we allow things like this to happen...... it is time to stand up for what is right and not tolerate all this kind of crap. ..... My fingers are about raw from typing. I have written Senators, whitehouse.com, Oprah, Good Morning America, Newspapers, & TV stations, to express the fact that the American public should NOT consider this appropriate and we need to stop helping this woman, by feeding her "fame" or allowing her to draw welfare. I even wrote GOV. Schwartzenegger (sp?)!! If it is a mental issue, then the state needs to step in and take care of business. |

This whole situation is irritating. If you can have 14 kids and take care of them properly then fine, but if you can't even get a job to support them, then WHY?! Couldn't she have donated her embryo's instead since she didn't want them destroyed? |

I am so tired of people being so politically correct. It has gotten to the point that no one can say or do anything without offending someone. Fact of the matter is, someone who is putting someone else, in this case the children, in danger, forget herself, then yeah-IMO, she should be stopped. What if she decides 14 is not enough? She doesn't have to go through IVF to get pregnant. Whose to say that she won't just out and sleep with someone? Her own mother is saying that she needs evaulation-if it were not babies and it was drugs, she would be either in jail or hospital, what's the difference? Addiction is addiction. And the sad part is we, the taxpayers will wind up funding her health care as well as the raising of her children. |
Firstly, I think the fertility doctor is probably under investigation already. What he/she did in implanting 8 embryos borders on malpractice - then you add in all of the extenuating circumstances and you wonder if the clinic did ANY due diligence at all in this case! As a nurse, it upsets me. The health issues multiple-birth and premature babies face can be devastating. What worries me greatly is the grandmother's implication that this Mother is almost like a "hoarder" of children - that she is obsessed with having children. To me, that does not sound like a state of mind that has the best interests of the children in mind. Rather, it sounds to me like an objectification of the children, if what the grandmother said is true. If that is the case, I personally think the mother needs to have a psychological evaluation asap - if for nothing else, to be sure those children will be safe and not just an extension of some hoarding disorder. Let's hope that's not the case. I'd be very surprised if CPS wasn't already looking into this, especially if the Mother is already at risk in providing for her current children (which seems to be the case, possibly). Who knows - maybe she'll surprise us all and be the best mother on the planet - but given some of the facts that have surfaced, I sure hope her entire situation is looked at and assessed properly for the safety of these babies (if the facts are true, that is). |
For the love and well being of these 14 children, I hope they are looking into this woman's financial, mental and emotional ability to raise these kids! It sounds like from all these reports that her Mother knows she has a problem: Grandma: Octuplets mom obsessed with having kids - Yahoo! News If her Mother is really going to be "gone" when she comes home with these babies, what in the world is she going to do? She considers herself a professional student who lives off of grants and the taxpayers. There isn't a father in the mix to provide support of any kind, since these children are all a result of sperm donors! This is just not normal! I don't question couples who want a large family and have the means to do it, this is clearly not the case here and someone needs to step in and get to the bottom of this! I resent the fact and I'm angry that hard earned tax dollars supports people like this. I don't want the children to suffer, but with all the homeless, starving and out of work people in this country. This is selfish, stupid and ridiculous! IMO |

This just gets me so worked up, but, if she doesn't have her own place, and a job to pay for food, etc for these kids, then, I think the state should step in and take all her kids from her. With us, we've always paid for our children ourselves, our own hosptial bills, food bills, clothes, etc. We never have asked for one bloody dime from the taxpayers, and I wouldn't unless I absolutely had too, but, I sure wouldn't be having kids after kids and expecting other people to pay for them |

Now there will be 17 of them living there. |

That whole thing is just a whole lot of madness. She definitely has issues and is "Hoarding" as Ann has suggested. God help them kids. |
