I don't know if (enough) people would give 2 hoots about a chicken if it hadn't been rather thrown in their face, so they almost had to discuss it. I wish Dateline/Oprah/Primetime/etc. would do more factual stories about subjects such as this, so that maybe people could talk about it, without also having to be distracted by the delivery of the story/issue.

I don't know what the answer is, at all. I *do* think that as long as we're still euthanizing 3 Million animals a year and animal cruelty is still an issue and people still rip the fur off of living dogs, PETA still has a big role in the animal welfare community. BUT, there are many other animal welfare organizations to support if PETA is not for you. Even for me, PETA represents about 5% of what I donate annually to animals. Still, I think they play an important role in keeping animal welfare in the forefront, that it has a trickle down effect to other agencies, and they keep us talking, don't they?

Believe me, I SO wish we could all spend *more* time actually talking about how to move forward w/ animal welfare...and less time discussing PETA itself, you know? But PETA causes exactly this kind of controversy - and it truly can be so distracting from the issue of animal welfare itself. Ironic, isn't it?

This cracked me up. On YT I am so pro PETA- and I am in real life too but probably not to the extent it comes across, at least financially. Every money I have ever donated to peta is gifts in my daughter's name so technically I'm not even a peta memeber. I am in my heart though.

LOL, I know! I probably come off like I *only* support PETA....and live-breathe PETA. But it's really not the case at all - it's just they're the only ones who are always talked about. The majority of my donations go to direct care agencies, by far.

This is imho and some may agree and disagree. PETA has a high profile name and should use it for the good! They always coma across as being fanatical in nature. Did they ever here that you catch more bees with honey then with vinegar....

PETA needs to use their name to focus on Puppy Mills and Shelter dogs, and not waste their time and our time on the time honored tradition of the Westminster Dog Show.

PETA put your money where your mouth is and pay for and sponsor a special on Puppy Mills and Shelter dogs that could also be aired either before or after the show on USA or Not.

Give the public a chance to be educated and educate them just don't assume we the public will take you at your words like we don't have a mind of our own!

Show the public that PETA is not just a group that only chooses to make publicity for themselves. But are actually people that ARE for the Ethical Treatment of ANIMALS!

and not just publicity whores!

It's human nature to focus on the bad things rather than the good ones.

Being a vegetarian doesn't mean you care more. If you are truely a PETA supporter and go by everything they say you wouldn't have a pure breed Yorkie let alone any other pet.

And Never did i specifically say you or anyone else in particula. I said the people that own a yorkie or any type of purebreed dog. If they truely followed What PETA promotes no one would have a pet let alone a purebreed animal.

In the origal post that is why PETA wants USA network not to air the Westminster show. Because of unethical breeding of Pure breed dogs. That is what I was refering to....

all yorkie purebreed owners and nonpure breed dog owners including myself in both categories..... I voulnteer and donate and do my part, I just dont see why I need to go thru PETA to do it... There are million of other ways to promote not to purchase from puppymill and to rescue pets of anykind.

Just my honest opinion.....

You know, I've no problem with anyone being a vegan/vegetarian - it's their choice - that's fine. What I Do have a problem with is that many of them seem to have a need to bash those that are not. WHY? I don't bash them for their choice and expect the same respect from them. Just as they have their reasons for not eating meat, I have my reasons for eating it, why can't they just accept that?!?

Well, if it makes ya feel any better, I don't eat meat (haven't for ~16 years) - but I totally support your choice to eat meat. My hubby eats meat, and I'll cook it for him and I don't feel weird about it - his eating choices are his.

Ok, dont take this as a bash!!Remember we love ya!!! I think its great that you are a vegitarian and that you dont force your right to be one on everybody else. Even I dont eat as much meat anymore. I just dont care for it as much as I did when I was younger plus now I cant taste or smell either. I have seen slaughter houses, seen animals get slaughtered also. I think everyone should have to see it. That will change alot of peoples minds about meat, at least for a while. I couldnt eat meat after seeing that either. But after a while, I went back to eating meat.
I just wonder why you/anyone would donate to peta? They have done some good things, but arent your donations also making it possible for peta to do all the stupid, fanatical things as well? The things that even you cant agree with? Wouldnt it be better to donate to a group that is NOT so fanatical, that gets the same things done as peta, but they only concentrate of the REAL issues like puppy mills, bull fighting, legitimate animal abuse? It just seems like any donation to peta is used to fuel the fanatical fire of petas warped agenda. I think that money could be better spent on a more normal, responsible group.

You know I agree 100% but I think sometimes passion can flare a bit when you get the impression that people just don't care. It isn't the best but we're all just human and sometime emotion gets the better of you. It's something my daughter and I talk about quite a bit since she is young and full of that youthful enthusiasm and passion without the life experience- finding the balance is sometimes a challenge for all of us- (naturally I think she's got it down perfectly and I'm not a bit biased!).

I have personally never commented on anyone's eating choices and I also buy and cook meat for my husband. I appreciate that he is open to eating meat free meals and I have no problem when he wants to eat meat. In general, on this forum at least, I think emotions run a bit high out of frustration sometimes.

eta- I know I have been teased, questioned and down right made fun of for my choice not to eat meat waaaay more than I have ever heard or seen a vegetarian questioning a meat eater's choices.
