Mom to Marty & Maddie Donating Member | What happens when you call animal control? I have until today never had the unfortunate experience of seeing an animal in such poor condition that I felt something needed to be done immediately in order to save the animal's life. On our way home today, my husband spotted a terrier that he thought was stray, so we discussed our options, then turned around to get more information. If it was a stray, we knew we'd have to take it to the vet before bringing it home in order to protect Marty and Maddie from any illness it might have. It turns out it wasn't a stray but was chained in the yard two feet from the road. It couldn't have weighed more than 5 or 6 pounds but looks like it needs to gain several pounds to be at a healthy weight. It was dirty, matted, and it's hair looked to be falling out in some places. It was outside in very hot weather and we saw no water or shelter or even a tree to provide shade. This little guy (or girl) needed immediate vet attention. It broke my heart to see it in that condition. We came home and looked up the number for animal control. They said they'll have someone out to check on it today and that we can call back before 5 when they close. My question is, do they allow the person who reported the incident to adopt or foster? I don't even want to think about this little baby, who has already suffered, being PTS because no one wants to pay for vet care or take on a dog that has been abused and may have behavioral problems. Brendon and I are willing to do whatever it takes to make sure this little one has vet care and a good home. We have a few friends in mind who may be able to give him (or her) a loving and caring home, but I don't know the process that we need to go through when dealing with animal control. Anyone been through this before? Any tips or suggestions? I HAVE to help this dog. I can't stop thinking about it. |

Mom to Marty & Maddie Donating Member | I can't imagine them not removing him, but I know it's possible. I would hate to think they'd just leave him there. |

| You did the right thing!! How cruel can some people be to these dogs!! Having them chained up is the worst thing you can do to them. So I guess the animal control will come and take him/her to a shelter. I'm not sure how this works and you may have to call the same animal control or the shelters around you to see how it works. I'm sure they'll be happy to hear from a considerate person because a lot of these dogs get put to sleep for lack of space available or if they have aggression issues!! I volunteered at the SPCA a while back and they had green collars on dogs who were adoptable and I used to take them out to walk them and play with them. There was a back area where you usually heard dogs bark and they had red tags on which meant they were aggressive and were going to be given an agression test. If they passed the test they were given a green tag, if not they were put to sleep I couldn't even look at them knowing their possible fate!! To me they were all cute beings in need of a loving home!! So please call around and make an effort and maybe you'll be able to get a hold of him. Although there is a minimal adoption fee if he ends up at the SPCA. Please keep us updated too!!

I found a pic on Google that looks like him, only his hair is longer (and terribly matted) and he has more white than tan. http://lh4.ggpht.com/_LnjWQXd9LOE/SF...M/DSC00887.JPG

| Good for you in reporting that poor helpless dog. Who knows, maybe the chain is inbedded in his neck too. I would check up on him tomorrow, if they said they would come today, just to see if there is food and water and if he's still there. If he is still there with food and water just check back from time to time. If he's gone, hopefully, call and check on him. Good luck, I hope your call will help this little one. How can people be so cruel? |

I think animal control will just check it out to make sure it has water and shelter then give a warning, they may recheck to see how its conditions are . if I was you I would go by and check on it from time to time. Thank you for helping this baby.

| If yours is like our Animal Control they won't even come out. I saw a dog that hung around the bank (near busy streets) and you could tell it was sick. I told the bank and called three times before anything was done. They said they came out and couldn't find the dog. I told them that was odd since I go to the bank once a week and I never had any problems finding the poor little thing. We need better help and I wish we had Animal Cops here like they do in some states. Whoever that little thing belongs too needs to be locked up and treated the same way. People are so horrible nowdays, that it might be if you even went and asked them they might let you just have him/her. They couldn't care for it and treat it like that. Good luck!!! |

| Maybe I'm be selfish, but anyone that would do that to their dog dose not deserve a second chance. I'd bring him to the vet, and then either keep him, or adopt him out to a loving family.

| I'd suggest that both you AND Brendon should complain. I've heard that in some cases (here, anyway) that they wouldn't investigate a situation unless they get multiple complaints.

| I (personally) think that if there was a call made...that should be enough for them to go out and check it out.....afterall, that is what they are getting paid to do. That poor little baby! PLEASE keep calling (if nothing gets done) and PLEASE keep us informed.

| All I can say that in my county if I get a complaint I go. I seized two puppies yesterday one had a wound that was 18 inches down it's back. The vet said it was burned with some type of chemical or hot water. If the dogs are in need of medical care or are in a situation where they could die in Virginia you can take them and I do! I do not know the laws in TN. But in Va every complaint is supposed to be checked out, if not you can call the state vet and they call the local animal control and make them go. I have had people call PETA and they call in the complaint. The county I live in the ACOs are lazy and basically do nothing! They told me I would have to take my neighbor to court myself. I called his landlord and things got better. If you are not satisfied with the way your animal control handles a call then call the county administrator. He is voted into office and likes to keep the people happy!

Mom to Marty & Maddie Donating Member | Well, they went out and talked to the owners and apparently they have several other dogs (all inside) that appeared to be well taken care of. They explained the one outside by saying that it had something stuck in it's hair and they cut it out so that's why it looks as if it's hair is falling out. I think that's ridiculous. It was still outside in hot temperatures, near the road, VERY thin and sickly looking, etc. I will definitely keep driving by and call again at the first opportunity. I feel so helpless... |
