Venue for 2009 Yorkie Meetup I am not sure if this is a bit early but I think the earlier we start planning the better . . . I know in the past we have tried to get the venue centrally located hoping that more people would make it but that was not the case . . .so perhaps we can start voting on where we should have the next BIG meet-up. I really feel that we should get a location where there are already more members residing in that area to get better attendees . . .flying halfway or across the other end of the country makes no difference in price much anyway . . . I vote for having it either in the west coast or east coast . . my choices are Las Vegas, NV or somewhere in FL  |
darn... I wanted Texas.. lol.... |
I vote for Denver!! I'm moving there in a couple months :D And as far as airfare is concerned... Denver is one of the cheapest places to fly because it is a "hub" for many airlines. If not Denver... then Monterey, CA :D I am going to be selfish in my votes, haha. I am from Monterey county and will actually be spending my summers there. My mom lives there too and has 2 yorkies. She would definitely tag along as well. I think Monterey is a good choice if we go with CA because it is on the central coast and fair distance for SOCAL and NOCAL people. It is also amazingly beautiful. However, It is about 1.25 hours from San Jose, the nearest big airport. So that's kind of a bummer. San Fransisco would also be a good place in CA. |

1, like you said, there are a lot of YTers in both places. And 2, I think airfare would be VERY reasonable (probably some of the best prices anywhere) to either of those! Great suggestions  And I like your idea of planning EARLY!!! ETA: One more suggestion would be I think everybody needs to pay their registration fee up front before we even have a contract with a hotel, and that way if we don't have enough, it can be refunded to everybody and no need to get a contract or start planning if we won't have a good crowd. Anyone else agree??? As long as it will be FULLY REFUNDED if nothing happens, I think anyone should be able to do that! |
Texas seems central to everyone (maybe), at least there are a ton of yt'ers from Texas. :) I could combine a visit with my folks to a meet up there. Yeah.... I think Vegas isn't too dog friendly but not sure where or why I heard that and I guess it would also depend on where you stayed, so I'll just not talk about things I don't know about. LOL You go get 'em Des. I hope I can go next year. |
Ok... Texas it is. .. lol... heeehee....come on where all the Southerner's,...... |
I put on my sheet either NY, FL or CA. I don't know that Vegas is too dog friendly. I would be more than happy to help if it is going to be here in CA. I could help for the others too but I just wouldn't be able to be there until the actualy event. The other suggestion I had was I think it should either be in the Spring or the Fall so it isn't too hot for the doggies. It was REALLY hot in KC for the doggies (and for me :) ) |
We need to pick a place that is: Dog friendly Cost effective Fun with things to do (like doggie parks, doggie bakeries, shopping, outdoor eating) So, I like San Diego, Nashville, Chicago (maybe NYC). |
I have no idea where i'll be living next year.. either still in GA or (hopefully!) Idaho. I think any city that has a major airport would be great b/c airfare is soooo much cheaper! Cause from Savannah it cost me $500 to go to Boise, but only runs like $200ish to Vegas, NYC, and other cities like that. |
Here's my brainstorming as I read everyone's replies... NY & CA seem costly to me...those of you who live there, am I correct? And I'm not talking about airfare because I don't think airfare differs THAT much, place to place. But as far as dinner, shopping, HOTEL, etc...I KNOW NY is...but is CA a lot too?? I'm actually starting to think TX might not be bad either, and you all sound right about Vegas, come to think of it, I wouldn't imagine it would be good to take our doggies down the strip ...soo....I still say TX or FL ??? I can't wait for new opinions though....as you can tell, mine change a lot :p ETA: Chicago and Nashville sound like great options too  Oh, gosh, this could take a while  hehehe OR.....Boston or San Francisco!! There is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much to do in SF...outside stuff...it was my fav vaca I've ever taken! |
What about Austin, TX? Isn't that nice and dog friendly? |
Chicago would be great for me |
seem to me that there are a lot of Easterners on here too I vote Chicago too |
Add my vote for Texas!! Houston would be a great place to have it. |
I've heard Chicago is nice. :D I'm trying not to play favorites. hee hee (secretly hoping for Texas) |

I vote NY  Southern states might be too hot in the summer for doggies (same goes for Las Vegas) :p |

Though we're in Cali, we'd be willing to travel a bit..... NY or Chicago isnt an option for us (safety), but Las Vegas, Denver, Texas seem more do-able. I guess it really doesnt matter, as long as its safe and centrally located :) |
Chicago, its a fun city! Nashville is a very freindly state with lots to do too. I've been to Texas, I but it was a long time ago, but wonderful too. But I'll go anywhere, cause I'm going next year no matter what, and I dont think its too early at all to start the planning. What about doing 3 places then doing a poll on it and see where it takes us. Keep track and see where would be the best outcome. |

I agree after a little debate we should put 3-5 on a poll and say "only vote if you are SERIOUSLY considering going" and then see where we end up! |
Austin or San Antonio would be good also, and not quite as humid as Houston. I don't know much about the airports there. I know that Houston has a major airport (Bush) which I think is a hub for Continental Airlines. The other airport, Hobby, is a hub for Southwest Airlines. |

Yep...but I don't think we should plan on Lisa doing this one.....I think she may have had her fill with just one :p....But we'll see what she says, of course ;) |
I vote for Texas or Florida. Both are very drivable for me and we are definitely coming to the next one. I already started a Yorkie Bank for it! Hopefully by then I'll have gotten Jamie a little sister. |
I definately vote for FL. While I love Des' idea of LV, (it's one of my favorite places on earth...been 2 times and am definately goingback soon) it is rather expensive, and off hand, I don't know of places that allow pets. I'm in Tampa and there are a ton of places that allow you to bring your dogs. There are also dog beaches here (3 that I know of) and a ton of dog parks. There's also great dog boutiques and great resturants that have plenty of outdoor (covered) seating. Also, if you were thinking about the Miami area, there are a lot of dog stores, hotels that allow pets, dog parks...don't know of a beach though. But there are already a lot of members in this area....we're even having a Tampa meet-up in a few weeks. and the one we had in Orlando had quite a large turnout.:thumbup: |
No offense to you southerners, but I don't do massive heat and humidity very well. I think we need to factor in weather for the time of the year that we are going. Of the top 10 dog friendly cities for 2005, San Fransisco ranked #4 and Seattle #5, followed by Salt Lake City #6. If I go, I will be driving so something closer to the West coast would interest me. |
Since most folks here live either on the east coast or west coast it's only fair to have it in the middle somewhere. I definately will never go to Vegas again, and I won't be making such a long trip to the east coast, as I'm sure the folks there wouldn't want to come all the way to CA. How about Souix Falls, SD.? It's so nice there. ;) |

OK, Here is my 2 cents. I think where you are going to have the convention should have some baring on where you have it. I went to a convention in LV the Mon-Fri before this one. It was 107 degrees. Way to hot for me, never mind the puppies. Same goes for Florida and Texas. If you make it more of a spring or fall then they would be ok. The same goes for having it in the North. If its in the late spring, summer or early fall, then great. Either way, the location needs to have easy access to the airport and dog friendly places. Flights can get us anywhere. We could alway do both, a spring one and a fall one, one on the East, one one the West. |
