I posted on the other thread, but yup I'd tip 20%, and don't forget to tip the assistants that shampoo you and if you have a different assistant blow you out, they also get a tip.

15% is so 1990's...remember, we are talking New York prices now. Tip on the higher scale..your paying $400, which I think is silly (sorry) so if you are willing to pay that kind of money then I feel you should be prepared to leave the same tip, probably $75-100. My suggestion is to find a salon that charges "normal" prices. JMO

I have had mine done in the salons and it did not cost me anymore than others here... about $80 I think. I have also had a friend who is a hairdresser use it using box color and it came out just as good! I always tip my hairdresser $15 standard. Usually my bill for them is about $60 and I tip $15. If its $100, I tip $15. I have difficult hair and go to a spanish salon. They blow my hair out straight everytime automatically and its a lot of work, hence the tip!

$400!!!!!!! Holy Moly! I just paid $175 for a cut and partial highlight plus product which ended up at $242 and I thought that was a lot!!!

At $175 I tipped $15... i know it isn't 20%, but he is the owner of the salon, so I didn't feel he needed a huge tip.

Normally a friend does my hair and it runs me anywhere from $60-$90 without tip, regardless of price, I tip her $15 every time.

My brother just graduated from beauty school in LA.. he's assisting at a salon in Hollywood (where Ellen gets her hair cut!!). I can't wait till he can cut and color my hair!!!

HOLY CRAP you pay WAAAYYY too much for that. just because they charge you more doesnt mean that job is done any better.. i pay like 100 for mine and it ALWAYS come out looking georgeous. theres NO reason she wouls be charging you that much other than because she knows if she did, you will pay it.

I totally understand the price personally.

My hair was only mid length and when I got it done in Boston at a top salon, it cost me about the same price.

It's basically the going rate for certain salons, and once you're comfortable with a stylist it can be very hard to trust someone else.

Yikes!! If you can afford it go for it. I'd tip probably at least $50 minimum but would probably feel guilty, however if I could afford to spend $400 on my hair then I'd probably be able to afford to tip better.

The gal who cuts my hair charges $50 and I tip about $10. I pay $175 for full highlites and I tipped $20. When I get my nails done I tip $5 standard flat rate. Don't ask me why.

to add, I don't think tips should be expected and anything you give should be accepted and appreciated no matter what the amount.

I hate when you go through a fast food drive through and they've taped a cup up outside the window. (sorry off topic).

When I get my hair highlighted I always give her 25 to 30 dollars extra, it usually cost me with tip around 150 for everything. We want pics girl....

If i lived where you guys do i would sooo go to where you go and rather pay less! lol But here mostly everything is expensive, i get my hair washed, and blowdried for only $12, $9 in the summer and they do it for any length of hair but that's at a very low budget salon, i only go there for the blowdry, never would i get my hair cut or anything else there lol But i do know places that charge less, they are just not as good, p michels i trust with highlights, well atleast so far..lol

I agree with you girl..IN nyc, $ 400 is pretty much what you have to pay for when you want a great cut and great color! I tip between 20-30% depending on how good of a job they do..and you do want to keep your stylist happy..

Thanks. Last time i paid 20% tip but i only got a hair cut and the stylist did a great job, now i keep going back to her cause i just looove how she does it. I got styled once by another stylist there and didn't like it so i always ask for this lady

Ok, the only way I can relate to tipping on that much money is tipping a tattoo artist. And I don't necessarily go by percentage. Think about the amount of time they spent on you, and then just round out your bill to a nice even number. I have tipped about 50 bucks extra for 2 hrs worth of good quality work many times, less for a less pleasing experience, and more for when they do a really good job. I wouldn't stipulate an amount before you go in there. Just decide how hard they are working for how long and think about what they deserve. AND, if you go to the same stylist often, think about keeping that person happy. I had one tattoo artist that did about 15 hours on me over a few years, and I always tipped him well because he was a really nice guy and worked extra hard to give me something I liked.

Tipping outside a restaurant is never EXPECTED, but it does keep people in good spirits, and when they are doing things like your hair or TATTOOS, you better keep them happy!
