| I have a problem.. Hello everyone A few weeks ago we noticed a young cat in our garden and we soon realized that it didn't go 'home' but lived in the garden. Then we saw that is was living off the food we put out for the wild birds! It must have been hungry to eat bird seed, but this is what it was eating!! She was also catching the odd bird to eat. I asked around the neighborhood to see if anyone had lost her, but nobody was missing their cat. I looked in the local newpapers under Lost Animals, but no luck there. I looked on the notice boards of the local shops where people put up cards to either sell something or say they have lost something. Still no luck. I have put up a card describing the cat and am still waiting for a result. So, either this cat is a kitten that strayed away from home a few months ago and has turned feral, or it is a feral. I then phoned every animal society and animal charity in the phone book asking them if they would take her, but they all say that they are swamped with stray cats at the moment. They also don't want to take her in and spay her, give her inoculations and return her, for a donation from me. It seems I would have to pay for everything. I am allergic to cats and cannot tame her and have her in the house. In any case, Tootsy hates cats!! She chases her whenever she gets the chance and has almost caught her twice!! Can Yorkies ever been trained to accept cats? The poor cat is hounded by all the other neighborhood cats as well, who want her out of 'their' territory. There is a particularly nasty, feral tom who chases her and tries to attack her. The poor thing lives in fear. In the end, I couldn't take it anymore and after seeing her looking bedraggled in the rain outside, I made a bed for her in the garden shed out of a box and some cushions, so that she had a place to go whenever it rained, as well as a place to go to get away from the other cats and Tootsy. I went and bought her cat food and feed her twice a day. She loves the bed in the garden shed and spends a great deal of time in it. This is such a dismal life for this cat! She is a particularly pretty little cat, too, with such dainty features and the most beautiful eyes. I am sure someone would want her if she could be tamed. I wonder how long it takes to tame feral cats? She is looking so much healthier since she has had regular food and shelter. She had a bare patch on one ear before, but now it has completed covered in hair again. She lets me get fairly close to her, but won' let me touch her. I just don't know what to do - any suggestions? Luv Franceen |

| Well Franceen....guess you have a cat I have never heard of a feral cat becoming totally tamed. She may eventually let you pet her but that is probably it. At least she will keep mice and other critters away. We have several "barn cats" as we call them. They never come inside and don't get shots or vet visits but momma is getting spayed as soon as this latest litter is weaned. Since you made her a bed and place to get out of the rain and are feeding her, I doubt very much that she goes away. Good luck.

| Well, if you think it will be happy living like this, then perhaps I should get her spayed and have her inoculated. I don't see what else I can do, if I cannot tame her. As you say, she will keep the mice away! Any ideas how I can get Toots to accept her? Am I asking the impossible?!! Thanks for these replies. |

| My friend has three Papillon's and they will chase the cat if it's out in the yard when the dogs go out. It just jumps over a little picket fence that's in front of the shed and goes back into the shed. The dogs can't get thru the fence. She has the shed like a living room complete with TV, so the cat is happy and safe. The shed had an addition put up on the front to look like a little cottage. I'll see if I have any pictures of it. We go there once a month for play-date, then at my house once a month. Yes, I would suggest having the little kitty spayed and give shots. She did that for her little wild puss!! http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...2June06021.jpg |

| my cat does not like to be inside... he prefers outside living and really doesnt like other cats.... I think as long as he has shelter from the weather and food he will be happy there. You can eventually make him more comfortable around humans, it just takes time that is all. it is hard to make the pups not chase the cats, but eventually, over time they will probably get used to each other, I know mine did and my cat was a stray who just showed up just like this one. Now they sleep together and love one another. Good Luck! d

| I think the little stray thinks she died and went to Heaven! She has a place to sleep, food and protection from the other mean cats!

| You are doing a good thing. We have a cat we adopted and he comes in every night for dinner. Lol ice seen what he does for breakfast...poor chipmunk...lots of cats are very happy outside as long as the have a definite meal and shelter when they need it. And don't worry when we first brought Zues home he didn't come out from under the bed while we were around the first week! Now he is big Teddy. He's 13 pounds. But really tall and long! You are just being that lil kittys guardian angel! |

Thanks for sending me that photo -that 'shed' is real cute! I'm afraid that ours is nothing like that - just a normal garden shed, I'm afraid. I think I will go ahead and organize having her spayed and having her shots and hope that Tootsy will eventually accept her presence. Thanks again for your replies. The dogs must enjoy their play dates. Luv Franceen xxx | |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Your a great surrogate mamma. Lots of cats like to be outdoors. I would try to get her spayed so she doesn't end up having tons of kitties.

| What a lucky little girl she is that she wandered into your garden. In time, she will start trusting you and will become friendly. She sure has a cute little home. I think getting her spayed is a great idea, before you end up with a litter of kittens to worry about. All the shelters I know will do a spay for a reduced fee for a feral cat. In some places, where feral cats are a problem, there are groups that will take care of it. Without feral cats, we would be overrun with mice and rats, so they deserve whatever help they can get from us. Including high-end homes with room service. Bless you for looking out for that little girl.
