During the time I was contemplating putting my Three Bars Granddaughter on the track, I talked to trainers and to owners of horses that had been "run". I took all the informaltion I learned from trainers and owners and decided that it wasn't worth the risk. It didn't take me very long to realize that the trainers were more interested in $$ than they were in the health and well-being of my filly.
Of course you do what's right for your own horse that's the top priority absolutely nothing wrong in that! I personally wouldn't let a horse of mine go to the track either...I use to own a Three Bars colt many years ago but like I've stated before I use to barrel race for many many years and that is actually where my passion lies...but I still think a race horse is awesome to watch all that power and speed and with such grace and elegance...again too bad they are started too young and pushed to hard in the horse racing sport.

I'm sure not every race horse but you stated they most go to slaughter houses and you did ask where colts and fillies and the others go and I answered your question as to other things race horses that AREN"T made for the cut can be used for.....
Ordinary horses go to slaughter houses I think more frequent than race horses sadly enough....

Great Pic! I always wanted to be a jockey but I got too tall LOL...I always loved running on the horses! Guess that's why I loved barrel racing so much!

I live right in the heart of racing land and i know for a fact that these race horses are treat far better than most people treat the yorkies they claim to love. Oh and BTW, even tho I don't bet, I did have a favorite. It was the horse that was put down at the end. One filly with the guts and stamina t run with the big boys and almost won the whole thing.. Most people so against it don't have a clue into horse racing. i show yorkies too. Tell me, what is the difference? I don't keep my yorkies in crates of anykind but the big time show people usually do. Oh dear, they might break their coats in they get it on the grass or carpet. Our race horses are kept far better than most show dogs.
Firstly, calm down. Everyone here is an (I think, anyway?) adult. This isn't the school playground.

Why would I be directing that post at you when I quoted and was responding to Stormy? Do you think you were in only person in the entire world that watched the race but didn't bet?

I believe they are shipped to other countries, such as Canada and Mexico as the slaughter of horses is now illegal (as of the last year or two) in the US.

So frustrating and upsetting...
isn't this your statement when you started the thread. And aren't I the one that started a thread yesterday how much I enjoy the Derby but I don't drink or bet? Pardon me if I am wrong but if the circumstances reversed wouldn't you take it personal? The not betting and not drinking is in another of your posts .http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/off...-ky-derby.html My thread from yesterday

I would take it personal but I wouldn't jump to the conclusion of assuming that I made this entire topic because of you- one person.

If that was the case, I would have responded to your post, thread, or wherever you posted it (which I haven't even noticed it). This post was made much after the race and injury/death occurred. It was in response to that frustration.

Everybody OKAY here?

This is a VERY heartbreaking situation - whether you agree with horse racing...or not. So, emotions are pretty high, understandably. Mine were too when I posted the thread about it this morning. Let's just try not to turn a heartbreaking situation against each other.

I too know a few things about horses. I'll just say that in any money making business - you'll find all kinds of folks, with and without integrity. Some of these horses live tremendous lives - others, horrible lives.

If you want a great peek into what may have *once* been the heart of racing - I cannot recommend highly enough this book: SeabiscuitSeabiscuit

It kept me up for days reading...not bc of the racing...but bc of the heart of this horse. An amazing, inspiring creature! Don't mean to go off topic - but, there it is...

Alot of the horse meat is sold to France.

Maybe if Kentucky is such a lawful state and are really concerned about the horses, they would pass a law to prohibit the racing of young colts and fillies until they are at least 5 years old. But this would cost the breeders $$$$$$$.
I think that Eight Belles was a horrible bad accident. There are alot of horrible accidents in horse racing and other equine events with the horses and the riders. This is nothing new. I just dont think its right to push a young horse so hard so fast in order to make a buck.
I'm just going to follow behind you saying yeah that! You're doing a really good job posting what I'm thinking but in a nicer way than I'm thinking it (but not posting- I'm being good)
