| Question for those with a maltese We are "thinking" of getting Tucker a playmate and I had considered a maltese. I was concerned about tear stains. Is this a big problem to deal with. Do all Malteses have them. Is there a product out there that will for sure elimanate tear stains. My husband is the one that doesn't like the look of eye stains. He said he wants another yorkie because Tucker is WONDERFUL but for some reason, I am drawn to these little white puffs of fur! And, I think a yorkie and maltese would be cute together. One more question, what is an average weight for maltese? |

| I don't have a Maltese, but my ex has two. I have also been researching them because I want to get a female Malt next. Anyway, if you feed your Malt a good diet, he or she is less likely to have problems with tear stains. I've also read that poorly bred dogs (i.e. ones from pet stores/puppymills) are more likely to have them. The AKC standard for the Maltese is between 4-7lbs - just like the Yorkie. Anyway, I could never blame you for wanting to get a Maltese! I think they're adorable. I am a member of spoiledmaltese.com. I don't post much, but the people there are really nice and would probably be able to answer some of your questions. Some of them have beautiful dogs.

| Tear stains are very common in the breed. Some are lucky enough not to have any staining but it is a real battle for some pet owners. Even the good lines can produce dogs that have staining. There's lots of info out there on the subject. There are several tricks and tips that maltese people use, I have tried a few of them but not all. Some people swear by giving distilled water as their daily drinking water, some people add vinegar to the water, avoiding any food with red dye, giving a daily (1/2 tab 2xday) dose of Tums to prevent stains (changes the PH level and helps keep yeast and bacteria production under control), Tetracycline or giving low dose of Tylan (the trick here is finding a vet that's willing to give you the prescription), over the counter eye drops such as Colloidal Silver (some show people swear by colloidal silver) or Collyrium, Omega 3 supplements, Missing Link, not using plastic water and food bowls, and treating with a mixture called MOM. MOM is a homemade recipe using equal amounts of Milk of Magnesia, corn starch and hydrogen peroxide to make a paste. Brush paste on the stained area ( I use a small flat artist brush), and work well into the stain. Allow paste to dry overnight. Wash out in the morning and condition. Repeat for several days until stains have disappeared. I have bought many over the counter eye stain products such as eye envy and have not had any luck with them on maltese hair. I use MOM and Tums and have found it work best for me. Tearstains in maltese is extremely common. Here’s a great link for the causes and treatments of tearstains in malts. http://www.bhejei.com/tearsta.htm And here's an article written by Tonia H. of Rhapsody http://www.malteseonly.com/teartonia.html This forum has lots of info too. http://www.spoiledmaltese.com/forum/

| My mom cleans Kasey's eyes 3-4 times a day to ensure no tearstains...She uses Diamond Eyes in the morning on a very soft toothbrush...The will use warm water and baby shampoo (very little) the rest of the day...

| Tuffy's tear stains come and go. He has been on antibiotics a few times in the last few months and that has caused him to stain really badly. Now that he's off of them again they are starting to lighten up. I swear by stainless steel water and food bowls and filtered water. I also do the hydrogen peroxide trick and that always lightens it up. Lately on Spoiled Maltese I've been hearing about using denture tablets to lighten up the stains.. I haven't tried it but it's worked wonders for some. Also a product called Angel's Glow is basically flavored Tylan powder and that has also worked for some. I just hate to use that many weird products on Tuffy.. oh and most of the little "tear stain remover" products do nothing.

| My experience has been very good with tearstains. Lots of people can never get rid of them. We have 3 in our family. We do not have much problems at all, I really don't do anything special, except good food. Stress, allergens, changes in their body, will always result in tear stains. Lots of yorkies actually have them too if they are blond enough to see them. The personalities are can be very different between the breeds. They are so cute in every other way to let that keep you from owning one. |
