I don't have a Maltese, but my ex has two. I have also been researching them because I want to get a female Malt next. Anyway, if you feed your Malt a good diet, he or she is less likely to have problems with tear stains. I've also read that poorly bred dogs (i.e. ones from pet stores/puppymills) are more likely to have them. The AKC standard for the Maltese is between 4-7lbs - just like the Yorkie.
Anyway, I could never blame you for wanting to get a Maltese! I think they're adorable. I am a member of spoiledmaltese.com. I don't post much, but the people there are really nice and would probably be able to answer some of your questions. Some of them have beautiful dogs.
