| Any paralegals here? Hi, I am very drawn to research in criminal law, forensic, investagative stuff etc.. I would have loved to be a lawyer, but I can not defend someone I know is wrong so that's shot. Anyway, I keep thinking about paralegal. I called and there is a very good school not too far from me that holds classes 3 times a week and they said it's about a year course. Do you think I would get fullfill any of my passions in this career? I know every thing has their cons but, I am very instrested in this. I mean do paralegals / legal asst. do a lot of hands on stuff for the attorneys? If its a big case do you work long hours with the attorneys? Do you get to ever brain storm with the attorneys? What is the closest you can be to a lawyer w/o actully being one? I am 32 going through a very rough time w/my son I need to focuse on me and invest in my future. I hope my son matures soon and appericates and loves me. I put my education down to make sure he was in Beta and sports, etc.. I did join a health club I just can't cry everyday anymore, I need to put those emotions into moving my life forward and helping my husband who has supported all of us....it's time to take a little pressure off him and make him a wife he can be proud of. The only other thing I have ever ben interested in is education to teach K - 6th grade, but the legal field has always been the strongest pull on me. Any input would be greatly appericated. Thanks, Angie |

| I think it would be a good career. I worked for lawyers for 16 years. But from the computer/accounting aspects. Towards the end I did have 2 cases of my own, and they were kinda training me paralegal that way. Some of the girls who took the Paralegal training courses said that was really special they were doing that for me, as they usually don't do that. But then I moved and had to quit that job, so it didn't go far. But it just depends on the case what type of hands-on work you will do, yes you do get to do alot of hands on. I have a friend who is a Legal Sec/Paralegal and she actually got to go with her boss to the Supreme Court for a case. It pays pretty well too. Be prepared - you may have to do Legal Secretarial work to begin with, unless you go to work for a big firm as a paralegal right away. Now you got me thinking, maybe I should take that course and get back into it, but this time with training!! (and not in accounting!). |

| I don't know ANYTHING about it, but I would highly suggest calling around and asking some in your town about how they like their job and all of the above questions you asked on here. Also, talk to some lawyers and ask them the kinds of things they expect of a paralegal! That way you can get some opinions from both sides of what to expect from that type of job. And I say good for you for wanting to go back and do something else! It's never to late to start something you've always wanted to do!

| Thanks girls! I have a few attorney friends I have put calls into to ask. I usually see my friend outside of her office so we never talk about work. She is SO fun and down to earth, I am sure there are not many out there like her. I knew there were a few here that had been in the lrgal field is why I posted. MyLadies: You should defiantly get cetified if you enjoyed it, you must have been a natural if they were willing to train you on the job. Thanks, Angie |
