| American Question. I live in the UK where we don't have the death penalty, just life imprisonment for serious crimes etc. Here in the UK we often hear of men on death row in the USA but never of women...is the USA more lenient on women where crimes are concerned and are they more likely get a long sentence rather than the death penalty or are there women on death row we just never hear about....thanks for your input. | There are women on death row in the USA too. Eileen Warnos (sp?), supposedly the first women serial killer in America was put to death a few years ago. There is another woman on death row who the jury decided killed her two little boys several years ago. Personally, I'm not sure that she did it and her case is being appealed. I know there are others, but that's the only two I really know anything about. |

Death row is just where they house inmates that are up for execution. I am sure if there was a woman eligible she would be there. for instance in the state of Texas there are currently 111 on death row, 5 women and 106 men. http://www.tdcj.state.tx.us/stat/racial.htm Some people are on death row so long they die a natural death there. I guess it just takes so long for them to run out of appeals and their second, thrid forth etc, chances in court. Hope that answers your question. | |

| but I will say this...there are probably a LOT more men on death row. I mean..honestly...and I'm not being sexist here...but it seems that we hear more about men doing the hard crimes than we do women. it's usually men who are wanted for murder, etc. at least, that is how I see it anyway. when watching the news...it's not very often that we see women plastered on there for doing hard crimes....only every once in a while. but we see men all the time. i'm not really sure why.

| In Canada we don' have the death penalty, but we live close enough to the boarder that we hear alot about it in the US and from what i've read you have a better chance of dying of natural causes on death row than being put to death because the process takes so long. I guess this is good in the event that you have been wrongfully accused... edited to add although if you are Canadian and commit murder in a state that has capital punishment you are tried in that state... there is a Canadian man in texas right now on death row trying to get an appeal and wants his trial to come to Canada. |

| You hear more about the men because there are so many more of them. Men are just more prone to violent crimes. I think it's typical that troubled men hurt others and troubled women hurt themselves. There are tons of exceptions of course and that is why there are women on death row.

| There are women on death row, the amount of women in prison is also on the rise. Its a shame too because alot of them have children.
