These kids sure are going to miss their parents' cooking when they go off to college and/or move out on their own. I can't wait to go home for Thanksgiving and then again for Christmas break so my mom and dad can cook for me! My dad does most of the cooking - he should have been a chef..he's a great cook. And when my mom cooks, it's really good too. I'm a decent cook too when I actually decide to cook something, but I don't go all out for myself and get what I do when I'm at home. Like tonight I ate a chicken breast and some green beans (which is actually good for me...last night I ate a piece of cake ). But at home I get a salad, some kind of meat, 2-3 veggies, bread, and sometimes dessert. Mmm...can't wait!

Yummy!!!! Can I come to your house to eat? I don't blame you for wanting to go home to eat. But it sounds like you are going to be a good cook too!!!

Well, from reading everyone's post...it sounds like others have the same problem. My DH and I usually let things go pretty easily but we are still talking about it this morning. Our son ended up going to bed on his own really early last night because we were not speaking to him. I couldn't help it....I was so anger with him. He is not up yet this morning but I made his favorite breakfast in the world so he had better not complain!!!!
Our new rule around here is no junk food!!!! If he wants a snack...it has to be a healthy one!!! Maybe this will make him eat at dinner time!!!!!

I think that's a good idea. I have a picky 4 year old and a 13 year old who was never picky but always turns up his nose now if I make something especially if it's something he perceives as "healthy". Sometimes they drive me crazy! So I know just where you are coming from.....

I went through the same thing with my daughter. She'd ruin every family meal, so my hubby finally told her to excuse herself from the table and go to her room until she knows how to be polite at the table, she had to eat in her room. She stopped real quick.

I know everyone has different approaches to this problem , I personally just don't like food to become an issue....

My daughter was just complaining about this, her daughter is 11 and she doesn't want to eat what we would consider adult food, meat& potatoes and such...she only wants mac. and cheese, chicken nuggets or hot dogs, etc. etc....pretty typical for kids...they will eventually grow out of it....

I told her do not make food a big deal, just allow some flexabilitiy at meal times so meals don't become a war zone and every ones appetite is ruined...I would rather have a pleasant meal time than fight over food...

I always tried to make something I knew my kids would eat, if that wasn't possible I didn't have a problem fixing something for them....I didn't think it was fair to make them eat something I knew they didn't like....and I never forced them to eat what was on their plates..jmo

Default The Rule of Three

We had the same problem. So we let the kids make lists of THREE things. The three things on their list is stuff they do not have to eat. Those are the only things they are allowed to skip out on.

Also if I make something new, they have to try three bites of it. If they really hate it they have the option of adding it to their list, but that means something else has to come off of it. They are only allowed 3 things on the list at any given time.

I had the same problem as you and someone on another board suggested to this me and it has worked like a charm in our house.

^i agree with what jp4m2 said.

OK, so I'm the same way towards the stuff my parents cook. I'm a horribly picky eater. Sometimes I'll eat it anyway, but sometimes I'll just make myself something like a sandwich or whatever.

I understand that kids need to respect parents. But when you cook, aren't you cooking what you like to eat? So if your kids don't like it, give them an option of eating what THEY like to eat. I think things like that should balance out...no one needs to be forced to eat I don't think. Though I do agree with at least forcing them to try it. There's some things that we just look at and think "I hate that." but if we try it, we may end up liking it.

In response to both of your post....in my very first post I stated that I am cooking foods that he has loved his whole life. It is really sad how far I go out of my way to please him. One night this week I made this delicious recipe of Pecan Encrusted Salmon...I knew he would not eat it so I made him Teriyaki Salmon instead. (this is usually one of his FAVORITES) But he complaimed because it was not grilled. (it was freezing outside & raining so I baked it instead) That was just rude of him. This is only one example.
Another example, Filet Migon is his favorite thing in the world to eat... well, the other night we had Filets for dinner but I did not make Bernaise Sauce so he complained!!!! He is 11 and is demanding Bernaise Sauce!!!! Now that is just being down right rude!!!! This is the type of stuff I am talking about......I NEVER, NEVER make stuff I know he hates an expect him to eat it.
To my DH and I ...he is just being rude and disrespectful!!!! I could understand him turning his nose up to liver & onions or spinach but that is not what he is doing!!! He is complaining about even his favorite foods. So like I said before, I think he is snacking way too much between meals which makes him complain at dinner time and not eat.

I just wanted you guys to know that I am not forcing him to eat things he dislikes. Thanks for all the advise...its good to hear different peoples opinions!!!
WISH ME LUCK....its getting close to dinner time!!!!!!

ah, I see. Sorry, I guess I didn't read through the whole post.

Maybe you should ask him what he wants? There's plenty of things I love but sometimes I'm just not in the "mood" for them (haha I'm so difficult). Sorry...not much help. Good luck, though!
