| ![]() Doesn't look like the ideal eating arrangement to me either...I know your trying to demonstrate the issue here but it looks terrible! I want to scold the husband! Routine, a routine eating schedule and place to eat. Set up a place in the kitchen or elsewhere where your pup will always find water and eat. I would sit alone with your pup in the away from everything area and hand feed for a few weeks, gradually moving it back to the bowl and leaving the dog the peace and privacy he needs/deserves/wants while he eats. Good Luck! Keep us posted on that cutie!

| ![]() I agree that your dog is stressed and feels threatened. Put the food bowl in an area where your dog feels safer, without human feet hovering near his backside. Put the food down and leave your dog to eat in peace. Do not push furniture toward your dog -- that is taunting and will fuel aggression.

| ![]() I have a question. Who told you it is "rage syndrome" or is that just what you think it is? I looked it up and in the little that I read it says it is genetic and the rage is something that happens unprovoked and for no apparent reason. Just from the video, although it may seem like there is no reason for it as most dogs don't act like that, it was somewhat provoked (foot, pushing the ottoman). To me that was more a sign of food aggression. Does he also get like that other times for no reason at all? I would suggest seeing a animal behaviorist, if you haven't already. Best of luck. |

| ![]() I think the proper training term is "guarding" and most dogs will do this if they are not trained from puppyhood. The dog looks cramped and then has a foot shoved near it = ideal situation for aggression. I see this as very normal behavior for a dog which hasn't been trained so think a trainer would be an excellent idea as well as some of the other suggestions i.e. feed in the kitchen and don't try to aggravate the dog when eating. Teddy is not aggressive with food since I stuck my hand in his bowl while he was eating since he was a baby (to train him that food will not be taken away from him just because someone/something else is in the bowl besides his mouth - due to a cat in the house) but he still will gobble as much food as he can before backing up while my hand is in the bowl. I think its misleading to say this is a "rage" issue. It is, rather, a behavioral issue due to lack of training which could easily be fixed with professional guidance. |

| ![]() My Shih-Tzu (Shih-Poo?) does this sometimes, too, so I leave her be and feed her in a separate room away from the other dog. I supervise her, of course, but I leave her alone and it works well.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | ![]() This is not a rage syndrome. \it is a food guarding issue. And one that the video shows was provoked more with that foot and the ottoman being pushed into the dogs area. There are more than a few ways to deal with this - and a good trainer can guide you through them.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | ![]() This video is very upsetting, so many things were done wrong here, it's almost like your training you dog to be aggressive. Yelling at the dog to "eat it's food" would never help a dog calm down and eat. Pushing the ottoman towards the dog, laughing, all in a taunting way makes me think your husband might be the problem, hope you get help soon.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | ![]() This is called "resource guarding" and it can be a problem in many dogs. But honestly, why would you shove an ottoman at this poor little guy? To me, that seemed mean, aggressive, and taunting...it makes me sad ![]()

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | ![]() Let me share what maybe an unpopular viewpoint - but it is mine and has worked for me and my dogs over many years. Yes even as puppies they must earn their food - even if it is a simple Sit and Wait command - then I release them to eat their food. Once the release command is given - I DO NOT interfere in anyway with their dining enjoyment. I also practice food exchanges - such as a real Bone is a big deal to my dogs and I trade them for another real bone! In this way they learn to Give me that bone ... this is important because on walks they might pick up something you don't want them to have like a smelly dirty but tasty rib bone or something like that.

Re: bolding above - I do the same exact thing! Why controversial? I use this as a way to promote impulse control amongst other reasons. Also, Teddy has a bad habit of eating the mail and he is very possessive of it and takes it with him to his crate (den) and will growl and snap if someone puts their hand in there to retrieve the mail. Well, this used to be a problem until I gave him the mail one day and then had a treat to hand. I gave the command GIVE and took the mail from him in exchange for a treat. Now, IF he gets the mail he drops it immediately for a treat after hearing 'GIVE' instead of leaving me little pieces of mail strewn around the house...ha. I see lots of instances where people unknowingly perpetuate the problem and I think this (OP post) is definitely one of those times. | |
