Tammy - Tammy - Tammy....... I can't imagine why anyone would buy a little male dog - "to breed."
You probably have one of the sweetest little guys in the world.... even 10 pounds is a "very small dog" and a wonderful pet.
My little Yorkie is about 9 pounds and otherwise a wonderful looking little Yorkie in every way. When I got him, I bought a little dog for a pet - and the term "not good enough" -- would never enter my mind. My little guy is a wonderful, affectionate, handsome, playful, healthy little pet. What more could I want or even hope for.....not a thing!
I truly believe that breeding should be left to the people who have the Yorkies that best meet the Yorkie standards -- so that the breed will stay as pure and good as possible. So many of the rest of us - still have wonderful little Yorkies. They may be just a little large, or a little small, or have coats that are less desirable, etc. etc. etc. They really aren't breeding quality - but they are "pet quality" far and above what most of us ever even hoped for.
Just out of curiosity -- why is "breeding" important to you? I, personally, have never intended to breed any of my pets, male or female. And, doing so, would certainly never make me feel that any of my pets are worth more or less in any way.
***** After reading most of the posts, I think the general consensus is that your little guy shouldn't be bred (and your husband is more right than wrong) --- but the fact that this is disappointing to you and you think of him as "not good enough" or "not up to snuff" or "not perfect" is sad --- he doesn't deserve to be thought of this way. I'm sure he is a wonderful little dog and a wonderful little pet. Count yourself one of the lucky ones........ just to have this little guy.
I can't think of any good reason to "want to breed a little male dog" --- unless, you are a serious breeder who has exceptional Yorkies and wants to breed to continue the highest standards.
My "perfect little pet" isn't breeding quality either. He's too big. But - what can I say. I never wanted to breed or show him anyway - and I still have the most wonderful little pet in the world.
