if you hadn't said you made a mistake none of us would have been the wiser. He looks great. You did a good job for your first time. the cut looks nice and not choppy.

Its probably just shocking to you if you're used to him having long hair. He looks great. Don't be afraid to clip him again in the future.

What blade and comb attachment did you use?

You should have seen my first time using the clippers. I was 13 years old, just got my first pair of clippers and decided to use them on my cocker spaniel. The results were horrendous. I ended up cutting off way too much on the feet which was totally wrong for a cocker. What made matters worse is that I had a show with her the next day. So in desperation I carefully made a little wig with the hair I cut off and put it back on. Would you believe it worked, lol.

I've come a long way since then and I am now very good with the clippers but it was a learning process. Poor Peppi had to endure several bad haircuts until I got the hang of it.

I agree. I had your same thoughts Darlene when I cut Kaji's hair for the first time. It was uneven in some areas and well... just not perfect. I kept going though. Eventually his face lost all shape and I thought, "the heck with it! I'll have a professional do it!"
Well guess what happened next.... I HATED what the groomer did to my boy. I did not even remotely like it. At least when I do it, I don't expect miracles and I save $40.

Kellie, It's a cheap set of Andis clippers model PM-1. I put on a guard that came with it, which had #1 on it, right over the blade, I thought the motor would burn out If I ever attempt a full clip again I'm going to invest in better clippers!!

I think you and I discussed those clippers before you bought them. I never used them for a body clip...I'm really impressed now.

Great set of clippers....Andis Master Clipper. They are heavier than what you are using now but I love mine. Sally's beauty supply carries them.

When I first got Morgan (and before I got into grooming professionally) I too bought a cheap set of clippers figuring I'd do it myself. I don't remember what kind they were but they were similar to the ones you bought and had those same stupid plastic snap on combs. My first attempt at grooming was horrible. She was uneven and choppy in places where the comb snapped off the blade. It was just terrible. Plus the clippers got really hot, really fast. Needless to say I threw them out when i was finished and put a set of pjs on morgan to hide her terrible hair cut. The next time she was due for a cut I took her to a professional groomer (...at petsmart...) and she came out SO short and looked worse then when i did it. I even gave them a picture and a length I wanted. morgan was in great shape and had not 1 tangle. After this botch job I figured I'd give it another go since my 2nd attempt couldn't be any worse then this one.

So i went on petedge and ordered the Andis Ultra Edge 2 speed clippers and a few different andis blades, plus all the things I would need to maintain the clippers. My second haircut was so much better then the first and I've groomed her myself from then on. 3 years later i went to grooming school and used those same clippers instead of the ones they gave me. Now the Ultra Edges are my back up clippers and I have the awesome new andis 5 speed as my main one.

Anyway, Good tools make a big difference.

With all that being said, i still think you did a great job on your first cut. What look were you aiming for and how is it different then what you got? maybe we can give you some pointers for next time.
