| When I was little our neighbor lady had her chihuahua get shut in her car door(didn't make it). It happens honey, a lot more than you'd probably even think. I'm glad you now realize it was an accident because your brother didn't do anything wrong really. Accidents happen because you don't know they're going to and can't stop them in advance, otherwise there'd be no 'accidents'. My sisters dog died one summer while my mother was watching him. We were actually having a big family party at the time. She went to check on him and he was dead(he had breathing problems) and was outside in a run with shelter, food and water. My sister flipped out and screamed at my mother blaming her. He was normally inside but since there were so many people(he was a bulldog)mom had put him outside, which my sister knew. She still blames my mother, even though for those two hours my sister never checked on the dog herself. It was a horrible yelling scene but it was an accident. Lets say I had someone watching my child, and then when I went to pick them up, while I was there my child drowned...it would be easier on myself to blame the other person. Even though it could have been prevented by either person. Nothing can be done to undo it but it's more healing to realize no one is to blame. My mother felt horrible but none of us felt it was her fault. I'm sure your brother feels horrible but he didn't do it on purpose and I'm glad you've moved on and no longer blame him. Isaac was so loved, I'm sure he knew how much you loved him.

| Leslie, You said your brother was 16 at the time. did this happen some time ago, or just recently? I am so sorry for your heartbreak. It had to be tough to tell the story. I hope by telling it, it brought you some peace with yourself. The guilt we feel is always the worst. |

| I'm so sorry for your loss. I know your brother probably feels a huge amount of guilt for this. Not many keep oxygen on them in case of an emergency. I know how my dog is so undecisive about which door he wants to enter from. He also potties before he gets in the car. I will certainly be careful now, not to shut a door till he's in safely. |

| Thanks everyone. I appreciate the kind words. This did happen some time ago. My younger brother is now 18. I just posted this up on a different thread and was asked to re-post it here as well. He was a good little dude and I still miss him. Like I said, I can't seem to get rid of his ashes;old collars;the locket of hair I clipped from him... He died before he really got to live and I think THAT's what bothers me the most sometimes. |

There is no time limit to let go of his ashes, collar and the lock of hair (I clipped Jewel's hair too and carry one lock in my wallet, and another lock is in a small box with her ashes). You may never want to do that and that's ok. I'm sure many of us has momentos of our pets for years even decades. The time will come when you know in your heart what is right for you. I hope you are healing and have forgiven yourself like you forgave your brother. Corinne
