Why was the Yorkies created? And why breed them?

My little girl Haley is a good mole cather and even caught a fly or two ... that girl hates flies they drive her crazy, she chases them from room to room, its so funny...

Also there are plenty of mixbreeds in shelters needing to be adopted so why breed them?

So if you follow the health issues of both of the breeds you're mixing and try to exterminate those issues can you get a healthy dog? when mixing breeds you have a chance at the bad genes coming out or the good ones. Just like pure breds. You can follow the trats right? like following the traits in full bredded dogs? Even if it's hard, it's stil not impossible right?

when you get mixed breeds most people dont' keep track of their pedigree so really hard to keep tract especially if you get something from the pound or rescue. those that mix a breed and keep tract and records probably are on the road to establishing a new breed or line of dogs but just to breed an average "mix" hard to keep tract of bad traits and or good traits. Some of my best dogs were a mix and I loved them dearly but would have never dreamed of breeding them.

Most health issues do not show their ugly heads until later in their life. unless you kept tract of your mix litters for generations to determine if they any health problems, you will not know.

Yes, most these days don't have their terrier instincts but there are clubs and events you can take your dog to. They [the dog ] participat in races through these man made underground tunnels to try and find a caged rat. I thought it was very intresting and maybe fun for your dog, so they can do something the were actually breed to do.

Well, as Sarge is a mixed breed, I'd have to say in our situation it was not wrong. I do think the careless breeding of inexperienced breeders is a NO-No, BUT, my breeder was wonderful with 35 yrs of experience. She has only been doing mixes for 10yrs, but thats still more than most. She had both bloodlines (3 generations worth) of my puppy so she was able to guarentee any health issues. I can see, however, how most mixed-breedings are done impulsively by people that are undeserving of dogs in the first place. I found a good one.

I'd say all the traits haven't totally been breed out. Rrosenberry's Bailey is quite the hunter. He's on the raw food plan, ya know.

Lacy's never seen a mouse but I guarantee you she'd attack it if she could! Every night there are always tons of frogs outside and she will try her hardest to attack them! She can barely concentrate on pottying because she's hunting for frogs. It's pretty annoying sometimes because if she catches one it makes her foam at the mouth...I have to really try hard to keep a look out for them. She'll also try to attack lizzards. There is a huge one that likes to lay on our front porch and she sits at the window whining because she wants to go attack it.

We really don't use dogs for tasks the way people used to.....we love them because they are our pets... Correct??!! There is a HUGE difference. I don't expect my Tobey to do anything for me. I just know that with the proper training and love I will have developed (within the breed's characteristics) a loving companion, and a fun pet to play with. As far as mice goes....He is CLUELESS!! This past winter, (and mind you, he was only 3-4 months old) we actually had a mouse in the house that I had spotted... as my husband was trying to keep an eye on it in the corner of a hallway, Tobey came from under his legs and tottled right past it into the living room!!! It was actually very funny!! He didn't even pick up on the scent....yet he could smell a hot dog from across the house People today just want certain breeds for their looks and other pet-type characteristics I think. Like I wanted a Yorkie because I heard that it was the type of dog that USUALLY liked to sit on laps and cuddle, and that terriers were USUALLY smart, and I liked the looks (coloring) and that they were smaller in size. I don't need anything to catch my vermits because I live in 2007....but that doesn't mean people shouldn't continue to breed the amazing animals that we all love as our pets.....Agree??

Most breeds are being used for what they were originally bred for anymore. If we stopped breeding all these breeds because we don't need them to perform those tasks anymore, we wouldn't have very many breeds anymore... As for breeding mixes intentionally..don't even get me started on that

I am confused...most yorkie owners aren't using their dogs to catch "vermits" right?? and most border collies aren't used to round up some cattle...?? Am i correct? MOST is obviously the key word here, some people do use their dogs for tasks and I actually think that is awesome! Dogs are happiest sometimes doing what nature intended.... But your AVERAGE breeder doesn't breed their dogs for the tasks for which they were originally created.. correct? I mean, of course, if yorkshire terrriers are bred correctly, they should IN THEORY have the same traits as their ancestors...correct? (NOTE: I keep saying CORRECT? because I am not a breeder, and I only own one yorkie, so I do not claim to be an expert on the subject, but I think it is HIGHLY interesting to discuss!!) I think people in 2007 breed dogs either to be pets, to breed, or to show. Correct? Does anyone know what started the showing of dogs? That would be interesting to know (sorry if it's been said before, i've only been a yorkie owner since jan)
