Cotton Coat and Matting.....HELP!!! - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Ok, I need advice from all the Mommies and Daddies of furbabies with Cotton Coats.....HELP!!!....i'm at wits end and i'm sure Vinnie is too! Vinnie has had his hair cut professionally 3 times, every 2 months...the first time we shaved him down, it was hot and his hair was changing...each time they take less leaving a little more for colder weather. I bath him once a week and brush him, I added a comb this week......even 24 hours afterwards new mats are appearing.....this week I changed to Johnson & Johnson's Detangling Shampoo......I don't know what to do....and the worst offender is the buddy belt, it mats him period. Please tell me this is just the nature of a cotton coat and not me being a bad mommy.....the woman that grooms him was very rude about the matting caused by the buddy belt the last time we had him there, he's due in two weeks and I hate to take him back. I love the owner of the place but she's not the one who grooms him. Any advice would help. I'm sure Vinnie is just as frustrated with me trying to get the mats out as I am trying to get them out!

when you put conditioner on him comb him with it in and then rinse!! it helps a lot to get the mats out and it helps with the afterbath brush!

i use buddy wash shampoo and conditioner by cloudstar.

Hoku has a cottony coat and after I shampoo and condition her I rub a bit of Cowboy Magic in my palms and then rub it all over her. I also have to comb her out every morning and evening and keep under her front arms cut short. Are you leaving the Buddy Belt on all day?

Cali has a thick cottony coat and scratches all the time so she has a lot of mats even though I brush her everyday. I took her to a great groomer who told me I neeed to use a special slicker brush and a dematting comb. SHe said the pin brush was for finishing her up. Now I would never use these on Pixie who has a thin silky coat. When I piked CAli up Monday she looked like a different dog. She looked almost silky and way thinned out.

1st of all, with this type of coat, you have to brush him everyday. before you bath him, brush him b/c if you don't, the water makes the matts even harder to get out. when you bath him, don't smash around the hair, just gently comb your fingers thru it and wash it that way. when you place a towel on him, don't rub around....just pat.

and yes your groomer is right, the belly band does cause matting.

she is right with the grooming tools you need.

brush brush brush everyday.....that is a must!!!!!

ohhhhhhh and one more thing......keep him shaved underneath (ghost cut or it is called scooping out)

Yes she shaved Cali underneath and you can't even tell from the outside but it helps keep the matting down.

Otis is cotton coated, but it doesn't matt too much. I usually keep his hair pretty short, except for winter. (oh, I dred the snowballs on his legs) I use pantene or minksheen. I only brush him once or twice a week because he doesn't like it.

Hi, I'm new to the list and have 4 yorkies. I of my yourkies is soft coated. I too have to brush her daily and I keep her coat short. Another thing that helps me is Miracle Coat, leave in conditioner. I spray her lightly before I brush her. Hope this helps.

I'd switch shampoos, too. Most people don't realize that the pH in human baby shampoos aren't right for dogs and will dry the coat out. You're better off sticking with products specially formulated for a dog's coat.

When you bathe him, make sure to just gently massage the shampoo into his coat. If you rub it it will make it mat. Use a good conditioner and brush him while blowing him dry.

If you get really good grooming tools and make sure you brush him all the way down to skin, that should help with matting.
