I'd switch shampoos, too. Most people don't realize that the pH in human baby shampoos aren't right for dogs and will dry the coat out. You're better off sticking with products specially formulated for a dog's coat.

When you bathe him, make sure to just gently massage the shampoo into his coat. If you rub it it will make it mat. Use a good conditioner and brush him while blowing him dry.

If you get really good grooming tools and make sure you brush him all the way down to skin, that should help with matting.
