| How Far Do You Go?? on daily walks with your yorkie? I have fenced in yard & so had always exercised mine by playing outside with an occassional walk. But....my vet told me that he is a bit overweight so I have been walking him every morning & some evenings for added exercise. I've been just walking through the neighborhood, but my property borders with a federal park that has all kinds of trails. I think he would really enjoy it, but I think once you're on the trail that it is awhile before you come back out onto the road. So, how long do you think they can exercise safely & still have fun?? Thanks!! |

Donating YT 7000 Club Member | I usually walk mine for about a mile. Sometimes I take them on a path that goes through the woods. If we're taking our time, it usually takes about an hour or so. Maddie starts to want "up" after an hour, but Tucker (who is also a bit overweight) seems to be able to walk for an hour and a half or so. Just make sure you bring water with you!

| I never thought of the fact that at least with yorkies (wether overweight or not) they are little & they can be picked up & carried if they get too tired. |

| My daughters yorkie is about 5 pounds and four years old and walks with her everywhere. A much as 8 miles a day. He knows how to ask for a lift if he gets tired. I was with her in Chicago one week and could not believe how active he is and how much he enjoys his walks. He especially liked it when he would spot a bunny!!! |

If you are starting out with more walks, start small and then build up a longer one. Just like humans when you start or begin a new exercise program, let him build up his stamina and strength first before adding more. | |

| Wobie and I walk for a mile in the morning, and jog 3 miles at night. He hates when I try to pick him up during a walk. He's 4 lbs, if that makes a difference.

| I typically walk her between 1 and 2 miles a day, but she's been out on much longer walks from time to time, including some day hikes that involve climbing sand dunes. She handles those better than I do! I think our little terriers are a lot tougher than most people give them credit for-- just make sure to pack some water and a dish for the dog if you're going to try long or physically demanding walks.

| Wow, yours jogs with you!! In a stroller or on foot?? I didn't think a little one could keep up for long enough. I usually jog in the morning....and walking Snickers has cut into some of that time.....maybe I'll see if he has any interest in jogging once he's built up his endurance |

| I have a beagle and he doesn't get as much exercise as a beagle should.. He gets to go on his runner and occasionally when we go to my grandparents he gets to run free because its fenced in.. I worry about exercising him too much because even at 7 we are struggling to keep him at 26 pounds.. He just burns calories so easily even when we give him treats and extra food.. But anyways I think that about a mile or two is good.. He'll be able to lose some weight and get healthier |

| Mine are down to about a mile now because it has been so hot and I haven't been taking them out onto the streets and park. In the spring, they were up to 3 miles in the park and now that it's getting cooler we are starting back up. They are both teapots, 9 and 12 lbs. But they do love to G O. I always carry water and treats just in case. They love to stop and sniff everything but just the command "let's go" or in case they have found something interesting "leave it" we are off again. It's a great way to get exercise and spend time with them at the same time.
