IMO a BYB is someone who cares about the money and cuts corners.. A reputable breeder cares about the well being of their dogs and puppies.. They take the necessary steps to make sure the dog goes to a good home and that when they breed genetic tests are taken to make sure that the puppies with be healthy. Reputable breeders usually only breed one maybe two breeds.. While BYB have multiple breeds often mixing breeds too.

Most BYB only breed one or two dogs... just b/c they breed one or two dogs doesn't mean they are reputable. and most of the times they (byb) care about their dogs, also. they just don't do their researchh to the fullest. they just know if i breed this dog with this one i can get puppies which in turn can get me money

Hi to everyone:
This might be of importance to some people, but last night at work the discussion of breeders came up at the coffee table. Some were positive comments and others were negative. Someone interjected that sooner or later there was going to be a law imposed. This law was to be that all breeders would need a license. I think this is a good idea, what do you all think? They would be over some type of license bureau and have people contact them. Maybe this would prevent abuse to puppies. Im all for it.I mean we have laws for everything else, why not this law for breeders!

There is already a law here but most dont follow it. It you have more than 2 litters a year in Colorado, you have to be state licensed.

I guess I should also mention that some people out there are not INTERESTED in showing. Just because they breed and don't show IMO DOES NOT make them "bad breeders" or "BYB". You can disagree with me if you want, and I know some will (especially show breeders), but I wanted to state my opinion anyway. Take it for what you will.

I consider BYB's to be a family or group of people that breed many types of dogs. The dogs are kept in unclean conditions, outdoors mostly, the breeders seem to have no knowledge of the breed or incorrect knowledge, or they sell mixed breeds.

IMO most byb are just breeding their family pets to get money but they do liv in clean conditions and such... they don't make it a focus point to keep them in a place to pop out babies but to have their pet live in their home and be a pet but if they can pop out babies why not for money? (in the head of a byb bot mine).... BYB come in different ways

What you have described is hobby breeders. i really don't see how anyone just "pops' out babies. My girls have one litter a year. and i think that is the way most breeders, at least the good ones, do it. i have to retire my girls next year and I swear I hate to do it. They are gorgeous and throw such pretty, nice kids but for the sake of my girls, I have to. I am also going to spay them at the time they are retired so they won't fall into somee bad breeders hands that will breedd them to death.
