| I'm sure this is a dumb question.... but what is the difference between a BYB and a reputable breeder who raises puppies to sell? I know what a puppy mill is but I have heard BYBers are bad but I don't know the difference between all of them |

| this might be a dumb answer...but this is what i consider a back yard breeder...we have some right down the street from us they have SEVERAL dog pens in their back yard. they are not cages, but they are pens. rows of them. maybe 30 pens all together. maybe more..maybe less...but that is my guess. they have several different breeds. the dogs all have a dog house in the pen as well as food and water. i honestly dont' know the "technical" difference between a byb and a puppy mill...but i consider the people down the street from me to be byb's now...a reputable breeder...that's a whole different category in my book. they are the ones who have personal contact and relationship with each dog...they care for the dog and not the money. they have one breed of dog..and give the dogs proper care, attention, and love...and i could go on and on. now...these are just my opinions...i'm no expert

Peeka Boo I See You! Donating Member | I think a BYB is someone who has multible dogs and breeds like a puppy mill but on a smaller scale and also keeps them in cages. I think a hobby breeder is someone who cares about the breed and loves their dogs they keep them indoors and don't have litters all the time and they breed for the joy it brings them not the money.

| A reputablle breeder is either a hobby breeder or a show breeder that studies ther lines and cares about the type of dog they produce. They also care about who adopts their dogs, A byb doesnt care about producing dogs that are in the standard and are just in it for the $. Usually they breed multiiple breeds also

YT 1000 Club Member | I'm not trying to start anything or whatever so I'm just going to say I agree with some of you and disagree with some... what i do believe is that some hobby breeders are byb saying they are hobby breeders.. they get a dog (of the breed of their chose) and because they have full reg and looks more like the breed then others that are being bred consider themselves hobby breeders... I mean their dog has many, many faults but might has some major points like a silky coat or is a certain color and then they breed them with 'much love' and 'good intentions' then consider themselves doing it for a hobby.... I see many 'hobby' breeders who dogs looks like the breed but don't have that much of a coat (comes half way down, etc.) or has a feature on the face or body that isn't within standard and since they are considered 'pretty' they breed the dogs. They even have them planned out to breed when they get them (before they are mature) and when they do mature don't look like they wanted but still breed them because they bought that dog...... And lots of byb love their dogs but don't educate themselves and do only love the money at the end so are considered byb (get it? I don't... i'm confused ) This is not to any breeders on here. This is just my opinion so please don't think I'm talking about you.. |

Breeders who know their breed and their lines, and then breeders who just breed without much needed research. Princess had puppies last year. No I am not a Breeder/breeder But I did all the research, had my Vet who is a Yorkie Breeder, and a friend who is a Breeder every step of the way. Would I do it again? I have no idea. I didn't sell Princess's puppies. I gave them to people I knew who would give them the very best forever loving homes. I get pictures, and hear about them all the time. I wouldn't have it any other way. To me, Princess's puppies are priceless, just like my Princess. Oh, and there are NO dumb questions, that's how we learn, if you don't ask, we will never know the answers

You have your backyard breeders that are closer on the side of puppy mills and you have your good backyard breeders that really care about their dogs and puppies and raise them well and find good homes for them. So far as being reputable - It all comes down to breeders doing their homework, knowing their lines, and breeding top quality dogs

| I bought Bella from a backyard breeder. He breeds several types of dogs, all small. I believe he cares for these dogs, they showed no signs of abuse or neglect. Their areas were kept clean, they were well fed, watered, had plenty of room to run around and play. But clearly, you cannot take good care of so many animals. He's truly an ignorant man. And I don't think he knows any better. Did I get that sick feeling, thinking these dogs were being mistreated? Not at all. But now I know where to buy or adopt a dog from and I would never buy from a backyard breeder or a puppy mill.
