| Another coat question Hi. I was wondering if anyone can tell by this pic if Tillies hair is going to end up silky and be able to grow long. The fur on her head is lovey and soft but it is very thin. On her body her fur is so dry and stll black, but silver is coming through on her tummy and hind legs. She is 10 months old. Tanks |

| I want to first say..... I am not an expert and hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me will reply. I can never tell from the photos. But a few things I've been told.... Does her fur feel cool to the touch? If so, her coat is probably silky. Also, does she easily matt? If she easily matt's, probably cottony but a silky coat can still matt just not as easily. Finally, one thing I learned on here and seems to hold true for most... take a picture. If your baby's eye flash is green then silky, amber or orange then cottony coat. I think you can still grow a cottony coat long but would probably take a lot more work. Good luck - she's a pretty girl either way! |

Therapy Dog Donating Member | I'm not an expert either but from looking at your cute pics of Tillie she looks like she has a silky coat. Izzy has a silky coat and don't get mislead that just because your Yorkie has a silky coat that she won't mat. Izzy mats still under her legs (where she squats) just not as bad a cotton coat would (I used to have two males and one was cotton and one was silky). The cotton coat was harder to grow and maintain so we kept him in puppy cut all the time. Hopefully the real "experts" will post for ya!

| Tillie is adorable, and it looks like a silky coat to me, but I'm not an expert. I've seen the eye thing mentioned on here a lot.

Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | well with our family, the eye flash is 3 for 3 and we are waiting on Diggy as he is 6 months and his coat is breaking right now....His eyes flash the greenest of the 4 so hopefully he will be a silk also. I have the silk coat down and how to care for it, not cotton, I am clueless thats why I am hoping the flash holds true and he is silk. Looks like you baby is silk but hard to tell in a pic and the pup is young and things can change FAST! Id try the flash thing to see what ya get from that.

Hard to tell from photos but just from what I see and the breaking of the color on the head looks to be a silk coat but could be a modified silk not true silk and not cotton. There is also what we call soft coated which is not a cotton coat nor a silk coat. I would call a soft coat a silk with cotton in it but on the more straight side like a silk coat. But she looks silk to me but again I can't touch it to know for sure. If it's cool to the touch it's silk. Hope this helps some Donna Bird Brooklynn's Yorkshire Terriers | |

| Thanks Thanks for all your replys. Her hair never knots I can go days before I brush her and still no knots. Its just on her back her hair is so dry and brittle. I'm thinking of cutting it off and see whats underneath its just her hair is so fine im scared to cut off what she has. Some of the Yorkies on here have the most amazing coats Im hoping with age Tillies coat will be as beautiful. |

| It's hard to tell. I would say silky by those pictures. Buddy has a straight coat of prue silk. He was the softest thing I ever felt when he was a puppy if that means anything. Today he is still very, very soft and his coat glistens in the light. Have you tried Minksheen shampoo or Cranberry Fields and conditioner, both are great for the silky coat. |

| Cottony vs. Silky I too think Tillie is adorable no matter what her coat turns out to be....but if I may piggyback on your thread.... I too was wondering about the coats. I have 1 girl Diva who's 1 yr 4mos old and from what I've learned on here and reading Donna's post above, I believe she is soft-coated...cottony, can mat a little easier but also can look/feel and seem more silky. As a puppy, she had the whole wavy coat/teddy bear face. Now my question is for my other little girl Foxxy. She's 5 months old and she doesn't have as much hair as Diva did as a puppyr. She has more of a narrower face then teddy bear and the hair on her body is pretty straight already(guess cause it's not that long). It is a little more hair on her legs and chest, etc and looks like it's trying to get wavy. Not sure what to call her texture yet...sometimes it feels more coarse than smooth but I'm thinking we're still dealing with puppy coat so I'm not reading too much into texture right now. Do you think her hair will grow in? Has anyone else had a puppy with thin or not as full hair that blossomed later on? Does the hair grow longer if it's cottony/silky/inbetween? Nonetheless, I think a yorkie is a yorkie and they're all beautiful!!! I just like all the info I'm learning about them on this site.... Luv It! I'm posting a pic of both Diva and Foxxy Yolanda |

| Both of mine have the silky coat. When they have their pictures taken their eyes are green. They don't matt too badly. Just depends on how lazy I get with brushing them. Your baby is beautiful. She also looks to me like she will have a silkly coat.
