Donating YT 7000 Club Member | HELP!!!!! leash training.......? Okay so here's my story. I wasn't ever really thinking about the fact that tucker might not like the leash since my dog rusty and my other bandit (RIP) both took to the leash perfectly. Well, I frist started training tucker inside without the leash and he got it really well. I also didn't really think it was nessesary to use the leash outside because he never leaves your side. well i take him for walks too i should have known he had a problem becuase he won't walk on the leash for walks either. he just lays down so i have to carry him. i had him outside on the leash last night becuase i don't like him out in the dark without a leash because he's hard to see.well he runs to one end of the leash and back and does back flips and rolls in the grass he tries really hard to get it off and he's out of control. we're going to use him as a service dog for my mom but we can't if he is uncontrolable on the leash. at the moment we're doing the thing where he has it on in the house so he gets used to it. i have him confined to the living room with me so he can't get cought on anything. it seems to be going well he's been doing that for the last 5 minutes or so. if you have any idea on how i can leash train him please tell me. i love him to peices but you all know how there's that one thing that drives you crazy LOL. well i have all summer and right now my patients with him are good (LOL) so if you have any idea on what to do please help me! thanks in advanced! megan

| With all of our puppies at home, we've had success with using praise words and sounds (no treats) when putting on harnesses/leashes. Tell him he's a good boy and use a high pitched voice... They usually respond to that. Start with little trips around places he's used to and comfortable with. When he comes in, praise again and reward. If it works, he'll start wagging his tail every time he hears the leash! Good luck! |

| No worries! I had a problem with Max on the leash to! At first he would lay down and not walk at all, like you said, but now he pulls to much wich we are correcting. Back to your problem! At first I put the leash on him in the house and let him walk with it on freely... meaning I didn't hold it at all. Then when he was comfy I picked up the other end and walked him to the backyard (or another familiar fenced area) and again let him run around free. Then we began taking walks around the yard, leading to opening the gate and walking around the house. After a lot of baby steps like this we made it down to the end of the street, around the block and now we go where ever we want. If they get nervous and lag behind make a sound that you can use consitantly for encouragement because if you baby talk them while they are not cooperating they get mixed signals, try a kiss sound or a clicking of the tounge. Most importantly make sure you are relaxed because they feed off of your energy. Good Luck!

| Ramsey hates walking on a leash, I have just recently started training him on one and he will walk for a quick second and then I can feel dead weight on the leash from where he has laid down. He does better off one, he will stay by my side and everything. Since there is a leash law here I thought I would start now on training him. |

| I don't have any help with this because Maximus never really had a problem with the lease...and sometimes I feel he is trying to walk me..lol.., but I heard that if you walk ahead and carry a treat and give it to them slowly that it helps..good luck

| First and foremost, make sure you are using a harnes and not a collar so as not to put pressure on the trachea. It is important to leash train even if your dog will stay right with you because sometimes you only a split second to respond in an emergency and you nee to be able to lift he dog up and into your protective arms quickly. A harness and a leash allow you to do this without having to bend over. If a large strahe aggressive dog appears out of no where it is so much safer with the leash. Megan~ You are doing it right by letting him were the leash in the house under your supervision. Little by little he will get used to it and if you priase him and make the walks fun he will actually look forward to theleash and bring it to you when you ask him to. |

| Chewy was very skittish of the leash at first. I think they just don't know what the hell this thing attached to them is!!!! I can guarantee that Tucker will get used to it and he will walk fine, they all do. But the advice of training him to walk next to you is very sound. You can just roll the leash up in your hand so they have no slack. Good Luck. |

| I forgot about the harness! Good call! Maximus has one and I have had to use it once when another small dog and him almost got into it.
