First and foremost, make sure you are using a harnes and not a collar so as not to put pressure on the trachea.

It is important to leash train even if your dog will stay right with you because sometimes you only a split second to respond in an emergency and you nee to be able to lift he dog up and into your protective arms quickly. A harness and a leash allow you to do this without having to bend over. If a large strahe aggressive dog appears out of no where it is so much safer with the leash.

Megan~ You are doing it right by letting him were the leash in the house under your supervision. Little by little he will get used to it and if you priase him and make the walks fun he will actually look forward to theleash and bring it to you when you ask him to.
