| ringworm ...twice..pls help Hi I am new to the forum! I want to know if anyone has/had a yorkie that got ringworm...twice. My yorkie got it in April..long story but her original vet misdiagnosed it ..twice. Anyway, she was treated by a dermatologist with sporanox, lymsulphur dip and medicated shampoo. Finally cleared up, clean bill of health early August. Guess what...she got it again!!!! I am beside myself. Thankfully I detected it early, last time was a nightmare. Does anyone out there know if this is a recurring issue with yorkies? What about prevention? I hate seeing her suffer with the itching. And it breaks my heart that I can't hold her, keep her close, etc. like before. Any suggestions and past experience 'knowledge' of this would be greatly appreciated. |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | I am so sorry that you're having to deal with this. Yorkies are NOT prone to getting ring worm. During the last treatment, did you bleach down everything...walls, etc.? Do you own cats or is your yorkie exposed to cats?

| ringworm Sounds like your Yorkie re-infected itself. All the rooms need to be cleaned and the dog kept dry. It may have been hiding on the dogs feet. Anywhere the dog has been and not cleaned, could be where it picked it up again. Cats are very prone to ringworm also. Good luck, Lynn |

| I was going to say this same thing. you have to clean with bleach to get rid of it. wash down every thing, bedding , floors, carpets all toys clothing , bruches, combs etc........and is there a cat around that is carrying it. |

| Lacy had it once. I have a cat that is a carrier of ringworm (normally doesn't show symptoms of it) and Lacy got it from her. My cat normally isn't contagious and it's only happened once. It was just a little spot and it didn't even bother her and it healed on its own.

| ringworm twice Hi Thank you all for sharing. I was told by the dermatologist that yorkies are prone to getting this. Now, I vacuum all the stairs(carpeted which i hate) and the area rugs went out to get steam cleaned professional, the stairs will be done that way again. I can't bleach parque (old wood )floors, it will destroy the wood. The bedding is bleached and clothes as much as possible. I was told HOT HOT Water, bleach and HOT HOT Dryer for the bedding and clothes. If I bleach down walls, it will ruin the paint..??? The dermatologist told me most important is anything that is fiberous is to be thouroughly cleaned. Now, I was informed of something else. Even though I gave her groomer all the new clean towels , tools, brush, clippers, etc to use....with all that, she could have gotten it there anyway. I was told the dead hair she had which was previously infected, could have reinfected her while being clipped if it falls allover the place. Even though she tested negative, it could be that it lingered in her hair w/out the symptoms, is this true? This whole thing , the first time around cost me over $1000 in doctor bills and medicine. Her prescription alone is $250, and this not even for the full 8week treatment. I threw out EVERYTHING she was on, and little by little I am buying things to be replaced. Fortunately with this round, she has only four-five marks. I got this in time. I just bathed her (that sulphur lyme dip is horrible). I have to give her 2.5ml of sporanox liquid everyday (the stinker spits out pills~) I work full time, for me to wash down every single day (walls floors etc) is impossible, especially since I am up at 5:30 in the morning and get home after ;7 each night...long day I do not have cats or other animals in the house. My feeling, the groomer..again.....this time I am getting a groomer to come to the house, and again, I am supplying everything..... Thank you for listening, it is maddening to go through this again. |

| one more thing Oh, yes, I do know it is contagious..I got it from her the first time..had five annoying marks.Hopefully I am immune to it now. When the infected animal begins its treatment, the medicine is already starting to kill off the infection so it does not spread. I checked when I bathed her, so far, nothing new popped up. Thank you |

| In Dr. Pitcairn's book he says: Ringworm is contagious to people (especially children) and other animals. Like mange, widespread ringworm indicates the animal's health is not up to snuff, as it usually is the stressed, sick, or weakened ones that get severe infestations. Like generalized mange, ringworm that covers most of the body is very serious problem indicating a severely compromised immune system. A healthy animal is less likely to harbor parasites like fleas, ringworm, and mange mites. Therefore, proper nutrition and overall care are important preventive measures for both of you. In addition, frequent grooming and inspection, along with herbal repellents, will catch most of these problems early. Be especially attentive when your animal has been in contact with other pets or is under stress from disease, emotional upset or a stay in a kennel. TREATMENT Nutrition: Start with a fast of two or three days then follow with the basic natural diet program in this book. (this is where you really need to buy this book.) Also add 5 to 20 milligrams of zinc chelate and 1/2 to 2 teaspoons of granular lecithin to the food (depending on body size). Essential fatty acids are very important for the health of skin and hair. If possible, add 1/4 to 1 teaspoon of cod-liver oil (depending on the animal's size) to the food once a day. Direct treatment: First, clip the hair around the bare spot and about 1/2 inch beyond it, being careful not to injure the skin. If you clip the hair, ringworm is less likely to spread and the topical treatment is easier to apply. Burn or carefully dispose of the infected hair that you remove, as it is contagious on contact. (In order to catch loose hairs, always be sure to vacuum carefully and frequently if you have a pet with ringworm. Also wash bedding and ustensils often with hot water and soap.) Be sure to wash your hands. Treating the sore spot will speed healing and help protect others from getting ring-worm. Choose one of the following two herbs plus the homeopathic remedy. In his book he gives you two herbs to choose from for the treatment plus the homeopathic remedy. If your at all interested in these I will give them to you. |

| Are you sure it is ringworm the 2nd time? My cat had ringworm. Treated it and it went away. A few months later, the bald spots returned. I did some research and discovered it was flea allergy dermatitis. I started the kitty in advantage and the bald spots cleared and never returned

| hi yes, it is ringworm. no bald spots thankfully. my yorkie is a stressed out little one. she is very hyper, very very hyper. she has been through alot too , not abusive but many disruptions to her schedule while she was a pup till about 2.5 yrs. my dad had passed away in 2005 and she was attached to him since she was 12 weeks old. but the first two years he was in and out of the hospital, and she was also affected by the stress in the household. she is a difficult eater. she loves her chicken breast every morning, and she gets wellness wet dog food at night, mixed in w/ different things, sometimes quiona, sometimes fresh meat grilled, so when she eats she eats well. i have pitcarnes book, but i did not see that section regarding ringworm. i will take a look. i cant imagine fasting my dog, she is difficult !...she was in perfect health prior to her first ringworm. all bloodtests, etc were always perfect. her weight was perfect,e tc... we always wash our hands well after handling her and use purell each time after washing hands. what is the topical treatment? all i know is to bathe her w/the special medicated antifungal shampoo, and the lymsulphur dip... thank you again for sharing, i really appreciate this alot. all this for the love of a little 6lb yorkie.... |
