Default Things To Look Out For When Picking A Puppy?

I recently was a Breeder that sells Yorkies, I was wondering what are somethings I have to look out for when picking him?

The breeder told me that they are purebred, vet checked, 1st shots and dewormed. Is the anything that I should be looking out for? He didn't say they are registered, is that going to be a problem?

I have read alot of threads already on this board, I was wondering if there are any other good sites to look at too?

I have wanted to buy one a few years ago but decided that I am not ready for it, but now I am and prepared.

thanks for any help, I will be looking at them tomorow.

Puppy should be 12 weeks before you take it home.
Breeder should have had parents genetically tested for health issue, as well as the dogs further back in the pedigree
Papers in themselves are not important, but reputable breeders should have AKC or UKC registered dogs
Puppy should be sold with limited registration (if registered) on a spay/neuter contract
Puppy should look healthy - clean, shiny coat, alert and shiny eyes, no discharge, no loose stools.
Breeder should offer AT LEAST a one-year health guarantee, although the longer the better
Breeder should be feeding the puppies a premium puppy food

The puppies are 8 weeks old...not quite 12 yet.

And how should I get the guarantee? Just be telling me? signing contracts?

The breeder should have a contract to present to you that both she and you will sign. You shouldn't have to ask for it. She should be selling all her puppies with a contract

Thank you for the help. On the first day I bring it home, should I just leave it alone? Play with it? Leave it in his crate? Should I ask the breeder what he eats so I can buy the same brand? Should I ask him to give me his favourite toy?

You need to play with him, and give him some time to wonder around and explore. You also need to know what the breeder is feeding him, so you don't have to switch foods and make him sick. Most breeders will give you a sample of the food to hold you over.

You should keep feeding the puppy the same food it's been eating for at least a couple weeks while it adjusts to its new home. Then if you want to change the food, you can slowly start to change it over. When you bring it home, you'll want to keep it in one small area of the house at first so you can supervise it. You'll want to spend time with it, but I would crate it or leave it in an x-pen when you aren't able to supervise.

Animal Smiley 036 puppy questions

I would ask if they still have their dew claws. When I bought my first Yorkie, I was naive and didn't even know about them. The breeder didn't tell me. I ended up having to have them removed at the vet's. As it turns out, this should have been done by the breeder.

Also, I would look over the parent's carefully. What kind of coat do they have? Silky, cotteny or wirey. Also, ask what brand of food the puppy is eating. If you change brands do it ever so slowly as not to upset their tummy.

I think the most important thing is to investigate the breeder, don't buy any puppy online, beware of pet stores, and maybe get a recommendation from a vet for a reputable breeder.

Visit the kennel if possible. If the breeder will not allow you to see their dogs and kennel, find another breeder!! The dogs should be happy, healthy, and non-aggressive to you or your family (which should come to the visit also. It's a family decision!) Ask to see both parents. Many times the breeder will use a stud dog that they do not own. If the father is not on the property, ask to see a photo and ask about his personality. Now, it is common for the mother of the pups to not look in very good condition after whelping a litter. Feeding a litter of pups places huge demands on the mother, so she may be a little thin, but NOT skinny. Her coat may be also be thin and shedding due to the hormonal changes caused by pregnancy. She should, however, still appear happy, lively, show no signs of illness, and interact well with you and the breeder.

Best of Luck!

You have been given great adivce. just be aware that hardly any breeders do bile acid tests on an entire litter of puppies or make you take limited registration. Many reputable breeders will sell on unlimited registration. there really is no need to limit registration unless the puppy is poor quality or very small. Now about the bile acid tests, the reason most breeders don't do them on babies is that they have to be fasted for twelve hours before the test and often, they are too small to go thru this. But there ARE some breeders that bile acid test every puppy. my vet recommended against bile acid testing for my first yorkie who was only eight weeks when I brought him home. he was bile acid tested at six months and we still worried about him because he is a little guy. That is something else you will need to be concerned about when you get him home. Make sure he is eating because puppies might stop eating when they are in a strange environment. this can cause hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. buy a tube of Nutracal to have on hand just in case hee stops eating. if he gets lethargic or not eating, give him one fingertip of nutracal two or three times a day until he starts eating. The ideal time to bring him home is twelve weeks but in different regions of the country, breeders let them go younger. here in kentucky, most go to new homes at six weeks. that scares me to death. mine go between ten and twelve weeks. Actually, I have only let one go at ten weeks. they are just too fragile. Ask, the breeder if she has a health warranty for genetic defaults that might show up later. good luck with your new puppy and post lots of pictures when you get him.

I have indeed recieved valuable information and tips, I will be a regular poster here for sure if I buy the lil dude.

I wonder if my puppy is from a reputable breeder, I don't want to post the link because if the breeder reads this forum it would be very awkward tommorow, but it is from this website.

http://toronto.kijiji.ca

The price is very good, which makes me scared she is one of those people from puppy mills. ($950 CA)

Oh and how many shots do the Yorky have to take? anymore deworming?

I have recieved some great replies thanks!

I wander if the breeder is good though, is she just a puppy mill breeder? I found her on this site http://toronto.kijiji.ca her voice sounds like she is honest, but i really don't know. If she is a backyard breeder should i just leave? The puppies were for a great price ($950)

by the time my puppies leave me they have three puppy shots and most of the times the vet gives them another one at 16 weeks. he will tell you when to deworm. Vets all do it different. i worm my puppies every ten days until they leave, then the buyer does what the vet recommends. usually every few months.
