| Is there a minimum female weight limit for breeding?? Does anyone know if there is an AKC rule regarding how little the female can weigh?? I know someone with a 2.8lb female that is about 10 months old--I am hoping that they don't use her for breeding, but I can't find anywhere stating the rules/requirements for safe breeding size. Any help will be greatly appreciated. |

| I've heard most reputable breeders on here say that they wouldn't breed a female under 5lbs....definitely not under 4lbs. 2.8lbs is WAY too small. It could kill her

It is an unwritten rule, not less than 5 pounds. However, there are other factors that fit into the breeding prospect. Whether, she comes from a line of free whelpers, whether she is healthy and is a good representation of the breed. And of course weight is relative, you can have a female that should be 3 pounds and is over fed and weighs 5 pounds.

| She is small boned in my eyes. I really wanted to purchase her and spay her, she is a sweet little thing--very cute. I just know that this breeder has bred females as little as 3.5 lbs, most of her "babies" are tiny--3 to 5 lbs. I was hoping there was an AKC rule preventing the breeding. Edited to Add--She hasn't even had her first heat cycle yet, I just don't want her to be bred. Last edited by mk97; 08-31-2007 at 06:09 PM. Reason: Add something |

| That's sad that she's ended up in her hands. Common sense should tell her not breed this tiny dog. |

| Akc NO, AKC has no rules according to size..1 or 20 pounds, they say nothing. There would be no way to regular a ruling...they can not come to our homes and look at the size of the dams before handing out papers. I go, bitch , by bitch..some 4 pounds have a nice length of body and I have tried a breeding, most free whelped, I found the c-section rate no different if they was more then one pup in the litter then with a bigger girl... but perfer 5to 7. |

| I personally would never breed a female under 5 lbs. Obviously, there are other factors to be considered on top of weight alone, but 5 lbs is my minimum requirement before I even consider any other attributes. |

| LOL--let's go with the crowbar. SHe'd know it was me though bc she knows how badly I want her. She wants $1200--that's the friend price, my DH doesn't want to spend that much(or pay anything for a dog). It breaks my heart bc she has such a sweet personality(not to mention she is adorable). |

| what kind of breeder is she???????? you do not want pay a breeder that has an unethical practice. if she is breeding unethically, most like she doesn't care for the health of the babies and you "may" get a baby who "may" be very sick.

| Breeding a Yorkie Less than 5 lb. About 25 years ago I got my first yorkie. She was about 4 lb. at most. I bred her once with a 3 lb male. The vet checked her to make sure she had more than one puppy. She had two in her. He said she would probably be fine but watch her closely. If there had been only one puppy he said definitely a C section. Little Ruffles had her two puppies in the middle of my sofa with my hubby and I on each side of her. One puppy , the male, was much bigger than the female. Both puppies and mommy all did great. I never bred her again nor any other yorkie over the years until this year. I just had puppies born yesterday with my Shadow. She had five. Shadow is about 7 1/2 lb. Although breach for 3 out of 5, she seems to have had them ok. She was bred with a 3 lb male. My vet told me he frowns on breeding a dog under 5 lb. and always make sure the male is smaller. He also said it is wise to have them x-rayed that last week to see how many there are. That way you may know (if he can tell on the x-ray) how many to expect and be monitoring that all have arrived. |

| I hope they don't breed her either. She is way to small, and they can lose her and the babies.

And (to the Quote above) Can you send pics of your girl and puppies? It sounds like everything is ok and I hope everything stays ok! Hope mommy is fine. Just shows that with any size problems can happen. | |
