A Final Word about my love for Yorkies

WOW, what a list of responses!

Let me begin by saying that I thank those who gave me positive advice for what to do going forward. I may get together with someone local who offered help. Let me also say...

1. I am not Nodak. Not related to Nodak. Nor do I know who Nodak is.

2. I am not a bad person who abuses animals. Please forgive the "Leather Belt" comment. I've (actually my wife) has only used the belt 2-3 times and never in an abusive way to hurt the dog.

3. I love dogs (nobody mentioned my comment about GOOD experiences with dogs as a child).

4. As all of you have admitted - Yorkies take TIME, PATIENCE and WORK. And maybe I just don't have the time and patience to work with Yorkies.

5. I don't hate my dog. He's cute and can be lot's of fun (I should have said this the first time) and gets much love and attention.

Thank you all again for your passionate responses - good or bad. I will seek the help that was offered and we'll see how it goes.

Oh... and I'll retire the leather belt also.

Good Idea Melman! Retire the belt ... Violence won't get any point across, probably make the dog MORE defiant and afraid on top of that. YIKES!

Getting some training help for your pup would be good for you, your wife AND your kids to attend. So EVERYBODY in the house is on the same page and using the same commands. This will help your pup and your family greatly.

To me the love and affection my boys give me is greater than the annoying habits they have (like lack of housebreaking) haha I work with them every single day still (they are going to be 2 in a couple days)

Im glad you sought advice for your dilemma with your pup. I really do hope that you follow up and listen to some of the advice and take it to heart. Your family should be enjoying your pup and CAN ... but at this point, what was not taught to him as a puppy needs to be taught to him as an adult, and he is more set in his ways so this is going to take more time & patience. But these guys are no dummies, he'll get it, he really will!!! Good Luck!!!!

Thank you Melman for reposting after some of the responses you received I didn't expect you to return.....

It was the belt comment that brought out the anger in some posters and rightly so, that is abuse to an animal, I realize the frustration you and your wife are feeling but that is NOT the way to make the pup behave ...all that will do is frighten and hurt him...you may get some cooperation at times but it would be out of fear, not that you corrected the behavior....the pup will not come running to you if all he thinks he's going to receive is loud yelling voices and a swat w/ a belt... you wouldn't want a pet to cower and fear you would you?....

I'm glad to hear some one is willing to reach out to you all to help and that you have accepted the offer....but if it still is not working don't force it, just rehome him for all involved....I hope things get better....real soon.....

I am shocked that I missed all this and shocked in general by all of this. You definitely started off on the wrong foot and I think you were having a moment of extreme frustration. I've owned other dogs and believe me, Yorkies are a special breed. They have personality and character like none other. The biggest thing about Yorkies is they louder you get they respond even louder. and Boredom is a big issue, you may think you're devoting all of your time to them and have no time to yourself, but with a high energy dog all the time in the world is not enough! Things will work out for the best, give him time to develop and calm down. In all seriousness you need to change your way of thinking and your approach to him now, while he's still in his formative stages or else you could end up with a little monster on your hands. Hello and welcome. I read your other post, a bit of a *yikes*. Hopefully, you now understand why.

What I would recommend is simply this: approach this dog as you would like to be approached by something 100x as big as you are. Let that be your guide.
