| Train Your Dog with Hand Targeting Did anyone see the Today Show today - Sun Aug. 19? Or have you tried Hand Targeting? Andrea Arden was on the show demonstrating the technique. She said it's relatively new with dogs - but talked of this being used for years with animals like dolphins - which of course I have seen that type of thing at animal water shows. I was think of trying it - they also briefly showed using a clicker - anyone use a clicker to train? Here's a video link: http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/16487590/

| My friend has a white boxer that is deaf. She uses hand signals for her and does really well with it.

| That was very interesting.......thanks for posting it. I do not use a clicker but I use hand signals with every command that I teach them but not sure that is not the same as what is being taught on that video. Hey use what works for you is my motto.

| That was really interesting. I guess you have to keep your pockets full of treats when you're first trying to train them.

| This technique did not seem to be hand signals - it's a way of training the dog to come to your open palm - it seems to be the 1st step in building other training & a way to help dogs who might be skittish around other people - while I don't have this problem, sometimes Roxie is slow to come or acts like she's in trouble when she's not.

Therapy Dog Donating Member | Izzy has gone to clicker training and we are going to more advanced classes at the end of the month. Besides the clicker she is also getting used to hand signals - best one that she does is when I point my finger down to the floor she will lay down. We are working on others but this is a fun and easy way to train.

| What are using the clicker training for? Is there somewhere I could go to see a basic set of hand signals?

| I have used clicker training from the moment I got Paddington. It works wonderfully. As a behavioral psychologist, I have trained rats to do many different things, pretty much using the same method as clicker training- including how to play team basketball! It really is amazing! Paddington also uses target training, but I use a target stick and not my hand. It is the same principle, just with a long stick rather than someone's hand. It is interesting to use that technique to overcome fear of people! I've used the stick to teach Paddington to heal, walk properly on a leash, fetch, and go to bed. It's amazing to see it work! Here is a wonderful link I found right before I got Paddington. I bookmarked it because it has some really great ideas and advice for training using both the clicker and targeting. http://www.clickandtreat.com/Clicker_Training/GG/gg.htm

As for hand signals, they really can be whatever you want. Some are more natural than others- for example when training your dog to sit, if you raise your hand just above and behind your dog's head, he/she will sit because it is the only way he can move his body to follow your hand. So the hand signal for sit usually becomes moving your hand out and turning it palm up. Same with lie down- if you put your hand in front of your dog and move it down and then out in an L motion, your dog will lay down to follow your hand. So, the natural signal for lie down is moving your hand in that motion. But really any signal that is paired with that behavior repeatedly will become a signal for that behavior. Paddington sits whenever someone holds their forfinger up (almost like saying "shhh") Hope I've helped! PM me for any questions- I could go on and on! -O

You don't need to use food though; Paddington's biggest reward for doing a trick is his tennis ball! He also works just to hear the click at this point- it is synonymous with the treat because they have been paired sof requently. If you do want to use treats, no need to soil your pockets; you can get a treat pouch that holds treats, tennis balls, and a clicker, that hooks right to your belt loop or leash! -O

| Clicker trainer here. We love it. And yes, Joey has been taught to "touch" my open palm with his nose.

Therapy Dog Donating Member | So glad to see others into clicker training....like I said....we are just starting this and Izzy already knows it's fun time when she sees me get our our clicker bag with treats and the clicker. We are still working on some things but practice makes perfect...hahaah. Also www.clickertraining.com is a wonderful site too.

| Targeting works for Zoey Zoey is very bad about the come command. She can sit, lay down and crawl, but only comes occasionally (when and if she feels like it) I started using the hand target trick yesterday. It is like a miracle. She comes every time and touches my hand with her nose! Yeah Zoey!!!!!

| We are currently in puppy class and Toby is learning using the clicker and hand signals. We were told that dogs can learn up to 200 signs. So with every command you give we should associate a sign. So Toby knows the signs/commands for sit, come, down, touch (where if I put my hand down like in the video, he will come and touch it), and stay so far. Now he knows the commands from the signs without me having to say the actual command. It's really cool training technique.

| I think my Staffordshire Bull Terrier would be brilliant at hand signals..I only have to hold my hand up in front of him, not saying a word and he will sit straight down..I then point to the floor and he will lie down with his head between his paws.
