| New yorkie mom with questions Hello, I am a new yorkie mommie. I got my baby back in June when she was just 8 weeks and 1lbs. She is now 16 weeks(4 months) and at her last vet check 3 weeks ago she was a little over 2 lbs. Her name is Yumi (you-me) Delilah. Maybe someone can answer for me when her hair might really start growing. Right now it's shown little progression and everytime I groom her, she just shakes when i am done and it's back to standing on end almost, especially around her face. I call her my little wild child. Will this ever change? Also, I have been trying to get her to only eat dry puppy food, but she is very finicky and prefers it being mixed with soft food and she eats around the dry food. Someone mentioned to me that constant soft food is bad for her teeth? Any truth to this? She chews on bacon sticks and teenie "greenies" so I am sure that helps. Now my final question pertains to treats. I have tried 3-4 different kinds of treats and she really doesn't prefer anything. How can I reward her if she doesn't take to the treats. Any suggestions? |

| Welcome to YT. Can't wait to see Yumi-chan's picture!! To answer some of your questions; She still has puppy hair so that is why it looks so wild. Wait until she is maybe 6 or 7 month old when you have her first hair cut. It will come down. As for the food. Chewing hard kibble is definitely better for their teeth, imo. My Momiji doesn't like her dry dog food either. So I mix some soft food (can food, cottage cheese, or boiled chicken) few times a week to try to get her to eat more. (Momiji is one skinny girl...) And I HIGHLY recommend NOT TO GIVE "Greenies" They are meant for large dogs and I hear horrible story about them. And treat, oh yes. I went through the same thing. Food is definitely a reward and works great. I'd try cheese or hotdog meat. Or I heard toy and play time can be a reward. Good luck!! |

| pup Welcome...a two pounder does not need alot of food..so if she gets a few treats per day, that will kill her appetite. If you feed canned and mix it well with dry, adding a few drops of water, they have to eat the dry piece to get the canned.. At her weight I would not be feeding dry only...wait until she is bigger. I give mine lot of veggies, fruits and chicken, liver, turkey, brown rice, cottage cheese mixed with dry..instead of canned. |

| Welcome to YT. Yes all soft food isn't good for their teeth. I'd wean her off it a little at a time. What type of dry food are you feeding her? I was told the greenies aren't really good for them, because they don't digest them well. Hope this helps.

| Welcome to YT!! This is such a great site, as you can see everyone here is always willing to lend an ear or paw! When I very first got Annie she was small and had a very small mouth. I did as the breeder instructed me to which was to shred the Pat Vanpattans natural balance log(it looks like summer sausge) onto her dry food. You want the dry food for her teeth. That is really important. I will also tell you that they will go after the softer food first and leave the hard. I learned to put very, very, small amouts in the dry. Eventually she was on all hard food and now we use the log for treat. You will get lots of advice, not all pups are the same. See what works best for your pup. But make sure she gets hard food. BTW I did try the natural balance dog food with Annie but it was too hard for her, even when I broke it up for her. It is a really good food, but the hard food is to hard for her. There is so much information, the thread below was started for people new to YT, it has a lot of great info in it. Just click on the link and it will take you there. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ighlight=amber

| Thanks for your advice I appreciate everyone's responses and the warm welcome. It's good to know she can eat some other things, I knew about fruit but wasn't aware of cottage cheese. Also, good to know about greenies, they were a gift from some friends who have a boxer...big difference |
