My breeder told me Coco would PROBABLY be between 3-4 lbs full grown, but she said that she would never guarantee that because who knows what kind of growth spurt she would have. Her parents were both in the 3lbs range, but the breeder said that doesn't always determine everything. So even though I wanted a small dog to carry around, I knew I would love her anyway if she grew. And honestly sometimes it's hard to have these tiny ones because you can't run with them because they might get squashed and they can't get on beds without supervision..ect..She's 2lbs at 15 weeks, but she could totally have a growth spurt, but I would still love. A little meat is fine with me. :p |

I am in no way supporting someone if they did indeed lie to you. But just to be a little devil's advocate here, there really is no way for your breeder to know how big she will get. Maybe she really thought there is no way she would get bigger than the parents. Unfortunately my mother is going through the same thing with a male maltese we took 8 months to find. Mother and father were 4 and 4 1/2 pounds. We really trusted this woman, and I don't think she was lieing to us. She said none of her past litters grew bigger than 5 pounds. Well he is 6 months old and is already 5 1/2. I tell him to STOP GROWING! Everytime I see him as we wanted him for breeding my female malts. Sometimes they just get bigger than expected. Also I have a 5 pound maltese and a 5 pound yorkie, the breeds are built differently and my yorkie is so much smaller than my maltese. |
I am just wondering if she is 3.2lb at 3 months of age, how big could she get (from your experiences)? When do yorkies stop growing? |
My vet is saying around about 6 months..you should double the weight at 12 weeks to get around about idea... |
So if she is 3 lb now she could be about 6lb? If, so , that would be perfect. I am just concrned that she would grow to be 8-10lb. |

Maggie is 4 months and 4lbs. She has gained a pound a month. I saw her parents. They both weighed under 5. So I don't think you can base their weight on their parents. The extra weight could be from granny or grandpa. Maggie's vet did tell me that the really tiny ones, have a lot of health issues. So, I'm happy that Mag-Wad has a little meat on her bones. Now, if I can just get her to slow down on the weight gain. Can you imagine what she will look like at 24 months. |
Unfortunately the problem with people that sell "T cups" is you pay more for a t cup and wind up with a tea pot. |

Just like our children  It's nurture and nature. Personalities vary within litters (my two sons are complete opposites ;) ) It is my understanding that Maltese were originally bred as "companion dogs" for the wealthy, while Yorkshire Terriers were rat hunters. There will be differences but there would be even if you had 2 Yorkies and 2 Maltese. Just love your babies and appreciate their differences. |
I DONT UNDERSTAND THIS ISSUE ABOUT THERE SIZE, TINY, SMALL, MEDIUM OR LARGE THERE ALL GORGOUS. DONT NO WHAT SIZE MY ROSIE WILL END UP AND I DONT CARE I LOVE HER WHAT EVER SIZE SHE FINISHES AT. SHAME ON YOUR FAMILY IF THEY DONT ACCEPT HER JUST COZ OF HER SIZE WENDY AND ROSIE :rose: |

Very well said. :) |
size I have had them all sizes..Yorkies are wonderful period. There is a photo in the lastest Readers Digest of Amy Tan and her two little Yorkies. Amy Tan takes her two every where in a tote bag she slings over her shoulder. You can sit right next to her and not know she has these two, Bubba and Liliput in tow. She has taken them to the White House to dinner and no one knew. She travels from California to NY all year long...if the dogs were 10 pounders they would have to stay home...lots of people need a small Yorkie to make carrying easy for them. I have carried a 3 pounder through an airport and a 7 pounder...4 pounds makes a world of difference. If a person wants a tiny Yorkie fine..if you want an 8 pounder to be sturdier with kids, fine. To me the problem is lying to people to get their money and giving them opposite to what they bought..ethic's is a thing of the past I guess.. |
I didn't know to ask to see the parents when I got Sabrina, everyone was so surprised that she was so tiny. (She's 10 yrs old and just since I got her to start Natural Balance dog food, she's made and is steady (for 2 mos.) at 5 pounds. Her aunt is 12 pounds - way over for a Yorkie, but a third that is being overfed by my Dad who thinks sharing at the table is a good thing (ha!). "Seeing" the parents may help - IF you know those are the parents. I've heard of breeders keeping "show" parents on site. I loved her itty, I love her bigger, I loved her as a baby, I love her as a Sr. |
I completely agree. If I knew that Lana was going to be bigger than 3 pounds I would have approached the situation differently. This just created a lot of problems in my family. My parents were against getting a second puppy in the first place but htey were convinced to accept her because of her size. They are very peculiar. I got a maltese/schih tzu puppy mix once and they forced me to return her becuse she was shedding. My brother, sister and I cried for hours but we had to do it. Especially because of this I wanted to make sure that I could find an "acceptable" dog and I thought that Lana was it. I don't know what to do now. I am really concerned about how my parents are going to react. I am also very dissapointed myself because I truly wanted a tiny little thing that could go with me everywhere. |
