My breeder lied to me I got my yorkie Lana a month ago and I was extatic. I always wanted to have a yorkie and my wish finally came true. The lady I got her from told me that she is a teacup - her mom was 3.2 pounds and her dad 3.5. She told me that there is no way that Lana could ever grow to be over 3.5. She is three months old now and she weighs 3.2 lb. I took her to the vet today and my vet told me that she will be at least 6-7 maybe even up to 10lb. This completely devestated me. I don't know what to do. When I first got her she was 2.1 and she grew over a pound in just a month. Is this normal? What do you guys recomend I do? I am completely lost. I still love her no matter what, but I have a feeling that my family will not be as accepting. They are a small dog lovers and if she grows to be bigger than our maltese (6 lb) I don't think that they will be very happy about the situation. |
I can say honestly from experience with my own Chanel - you will NOT care how big she gets - you'll be so in love it won't matter.... |

Cosmo gained a pound in 6 weeks I think it was maybe eariler. |
My Gracie weighed 2.3 lbs at 10 weeks. Her normal adult weight is 4 1/2 lbs. She's chunky right now...close to 6 lbs. I've heard that yorkies go through a couple of growth spurts. I think it's still too soon to tell. But either way, 10 lbs or 3 lbs, you'll still love her no matter what. And if the family starts making ugly comments about her size, just tell them that you accidently put Miracle Grow in her food. |
Your breeder never should have told you she was teacup! If you read some of the other posts you'll see that there really aren't teacups, just some smaller yorkies. You will love her, there is nothing like a yorkie! And 6 or 7 pounds is still a small dog! Just thank God she is healthy and don't worry, your family will be so in love with her they won't even notice she's bigger! |
There is no such thing as a "teacup" first and foremost ...but did the breeder show you the mom and dad?....Maximus was 2.1 lbs when I got him at 11 weeks...he is now 16 weeks and 4.5 lbs..but I was told he would end up being about 6 lbs...his mom was 6.5 or 7 and his dad was smaller...he too is growing fast and seemed to gain alomst a lb. in a week |
your baby will be doubtful reaching 10 lbs but I would guess theres a good chance of seeing 6-7lbs. did you see the adults? |
he's a porker.. :) |

I agree...No matter how big she gets you will love her... Sammi is 13lbs...She does not look it to me...Maybe your baby will be long :) |
When I 1st got both my yorkies I was told they would not grow over 4lbs they are now both close to 5 and I dont notice a difference in size from when they were 4.. 5 & 6 lbs. I too would be upset about being lied to but in time you wont be upset about the size of your yorkie, I am sure you will love your yorkie unconditionally no matter what size she ends up ;) I believe Maltese and yorkies have different bone structure so a 6lbs maltese may look larger than a 6lb yorkie. You never know, they might end up looking the same size or the yorkie even looking smaller. |
It is very possible that he could get bigger. Just because the parents are small doesn't mean that you will get a small one too. My friend for example purchased her male. He was suppose to be around 4 lbs because both parents were around that size. He ended up being 6+ lbs and when the breeder found out, she changed out her "stock". |
I didn't get to see her parents because the lady told me that the mom was not hers and dad was "taken out for a walk." I should have known that there was somthing fishy about that. I saw the picture of Lana in the e-mail they sent me and I loved the way she looked. She also told me that she lives only 45 minutes from me but after driving for 3 hours I figured out that that wasn't true. I should have known that she is not a good person to deal with. When I got there (my sister was with me) we were in a rush because my sister was late for work due to her misleading us about the distance between our residences. Because of this we just took Lana and left without being able to wait to see the dad. |
My breeder made no guarantees but she estimated Chewy's size to be at 4lbs. When I think about this now, I realize how small that is. Sometimes a couple of extra pounds is much better for the doggie. Regardless, I'm sure your feelings about puppy won't change no matter what his size. |
I'm no breeder, but from what I've read there really is no way to predict the adult weight or a puppy. Anyway, I don't think it's that big of a deal. If your family does not accept her for being 8 pounds rather then 3, then shame on them - that't their loss. When I got Tucker I was told he'd be 3-4 pounds. I thiught, great - I'll love a little guy. He's almost 6 months and 3.5 pounds now and I wish he would get bigger!!! He can't climb on anything and I constantly have to pick him up. The way I look at it, the bigger the better - more to love! |
