 Who would breed a yorkie of 3.2 pounds with a male of 3.5 pounds ?
Its a real shame .

Because of this we just took Lana and left without being able to wait to see the dad.

Sounds like some people I know when there is something wrong with the parents, they make up stories as to their where-abouts. Chances are, you're baby's parents weren't really that size.

I agree with everyone else.......You'll fall in love and size will not be an issue! However, if you happened to pay those outrageous prices that some -people are charging for what they call a "teacup" puppy I would definately contact the breeder and ask for a refund of some of your money, not that she will do it, but it is worth a try.

yorkieagility 06-17-2005 07:42 AM

I see a lot of warning sign from your post you wrote that would have made me stay away from buying a puppy. I will not get into it.

I think unless you have a contract stating that the size will be under 4 lbs I don't think you can hold her up to it.

But even if she is bigger than 6lbs I believe your family will accept her if you accept her.

Good luck! I know you will love her no matter what size she becomes.

SoCalyorkiLvr 06-17-2005 07:45 AM

Its too bad that your baby may not be as small as you wanted her to be but unfortunately I think you probably know that with living things you just never know what Mother Nature is going to do. Is it "normal" to gain a lb in a month? It may not be typical but it must be normal for your baby. It's not a science and we can only do our best but don't worry, you will love her and so will your family! How could you not?

You say that you love her no matter what but that your family may not be as accepting. Do you mean your mother and father or your husband and kids? I don't know how old you are an if you live with your family, but why does it matter if your family likes small dogs? 6-7 lbs is still a small dog BTW.

From a legal standpoint if it was part of your contract with the breeder that if she got bigger than a certain weight then you could return her for a refund or another puppy, then that is an option if you are really that unhappy with her, but that is not a common contract provision so unless it is in writing it would be hard to prove.

If you and your family are not going to be able to accept her if she gets bigger than your maltese then you could also find her a good home where they don't care so much about size. If you did this and still wanted a yorkie, it would be in the dog's best interest to get an adult so the weight is a guarantee. jmho

Good luck and Welcome to Yorkie Talk

I can honestly say that I agree with you. Your breeder lied to you. Unfortunately that *is* very common.

During my search for a puppy I tried to do everything that AKC and YTCA recommended. I still don't believe anything that anyone says. Every breeder I met said something different about size, care, price etc. It is pretty discouraging and I don't think I will ever go through this again.

Right now I am counting the days to get the puppy I found and I have no idea how big she will get. I hope she won't get too big because I want her to be portable enough for me to carry on long walks and hikes.

but if she is...too late, I am in love.

I understand your disappointment but I hope you and your family don't make her size too much of an issue.

What is her personality like? Is she pretty?

My puppy is one of those nutty face licker types. Yours?

Best Wishes,
D

Crap...I thought it was okay that Maximus gained a lb. in a week...it took him about a 3 weeks to gain a lb (got to 3.5)..then BAM!! the next week 4.5 (although the vet did have his harness on him)..but still that weighs what an oz. or 2...just figured it was his growth spurt??? as long as he is healthy he could be 100 lbs. for all I care..lol..and I agree with yorkie agility..about the red flags..sorry you didn't get what you though you were...some people are just out for greed

I don't think she is referring to an AKC classification when she says "teacup". I think she just means the size of the dog would be smaller than the typical yorkie. I may be wrong though.

luzangela428 06-17-2005 08:03 AM

Oh..I am still a little funny about that term..after my petsmart experience this weekend..so many people think it's a "REAL THING"...not through fault of there own...sorry I didn't mean to sound harsh..Maximus can in NO WAY even be classfied as a "teacup" or "tiny" ..I would think since he's already 4.5 lbs...but I still get it all the time.. sorry if any misunderstanding

Sammi is 13lbs...She does not look it to me...Maybe your baby will be long :)

I agree that no matter how big she gets you will love her. Muffin weighed 12 pounds, but she didn't look as though she weighed that much. She was cuddly, cushy, and was a perfect fit in my arms.

I would say that you cannot say how big they'll get by seeing the mom and dad, anyway. There must be a lot of factors to consider, such as the grandparents, diet, health, etc... ;)

YorkieRose 06-17-2005 08:06 AM

breeder

The male went out for a walk..good one.
Yes, the breeder lied, maybe out of ignorance or greed. Your girl was at least 2 full pounds at 8 weeks and she will be the size of the parents combined.

Size does not determine how much I love my Yorkies...BUT and it is a big butt..if you pay more for a certain type Yorkie...show, breed, tiny, large you should get what you pay for IMO...Many people want a certain type, pay big buck for it and do not get it.
I would talk with the breeder and ask for a partial refund.

AntilopaUCF 06-17-2005 08:07 AM

I know that "teacup" is not actually a breed - it just reffers to small size. I wanted a little purse dog that I could carry around with me. I can do that with Lili at 6 lb and I wouldn't mind if Lana got to be that weight. I dont' know how I would carry Lana if she got to be bigger than Lili. This way I can sneek them in the stores with me and no one notices ;) but If Lana got to be bigger, this would be impossible.

feminvstr 06-17-2005 08:09 AM

I am sorry you were lied to, your first warning sign is no parents on site..The absense of both the mom and dad proves the have something to hide and arent being truthful about their breeding. IMHO

When a breeder makes it inconvenient to see the parents please politely say you will return when they are available.

I am sorry for you!

luzangela428 06-17-2005 08:09 AM

My friend has a big yorkie..9lbs..and she is able to take her in the carrier still...she doesn't looks that big at all..I would say 7 if I didn't know better...it will work out

Sophie'smom 06-17-2005 08:13 AM

I was also told Sophie would weigh between 3 to 5 lbs. She now weighs 10 LBS. I too did not get to see her parents. I had just lost my poodle who I had for 8 yrs. I was so grief stricken when they handed me Sophie I just had to have her. I didn't even think to ask about her size because now that I think about it she was a big puppy. But she melted my heart and the hearts of my whole family when they saw her. My husband teases her and tells her that daddy is going to sell you by the pound and make a fortune. Once you get to know the dog size really doesn't matter. :aimeeyork
