| walking on collar and leash Hi all. I posted last week asking if anyone walked their dog on a collar and got some great answers. My yorkie is 9/10 mo and 9.5 lbs and hates his harness ( I've tried 2 brands) In training him to walk in heel we used a collar and he walks beautifully in heel . I decided to switch but of course was concerned with collapsing trachea even though my dog doesn't pull and is on the hefty side for a yorkie. He is a dream to walk with on the collar. He will not go near me or the harness the minute he sees it. I did a lot of research on the whole thing and decided to change my mind. It didn't sit well with me the even slightest possibility that I may be putting Buddy in harms way. (By the way he is my dog .not baby that I LOVE to pieces....we treat him like a full size dog..no outfits and no one carries him .which may be also why I wanted the collar) I guess collapsing trachea is a hot issue with Yorkies and so is the wearing of harnesses on dogs. Even if Buddy doesn't have it here is what made up my mind..beside the fact no one said it is absolutely safe..not that the harness would prevent it but someone suggested if you have a history of bad backs in your family ..but you don't have a bad back..would it be wise to wear high heels every day? At Anyrate here is my new question..I am now trying the puppia soft harness. It is totally different looking and I just got it yesterday. How do I get him to have a positive attachment to it? I gave him lots of hotdogs bits the first time I tried it on him. Now he won't take them ( He never takes treat when he is in his harness..like he is mad at me) How do I get him to come to me so I can put it on w/out a treat since that's not working. ( Again we do not corner him and pick him up..respectful like a big dog..(Not trying to be judgemental for those of you who do but my kids are 8 6 and 3 and we didn't want them to injure him when we first got him so made that the house rule ..snuggling on the bean bag is a.o.k.!) I just feel there is an opportunity to start all over..Help! |

| Here is our situation....Moose is 11 months and 11 1/2 lbs. We walk him everyday! He wears his collar 24/7 with tags on it. (we like being able to hear him all the time! lol) We put his harness on him when we go out to do long walks. He loves to walk. He walks pretty good (next to me) when we are in our neighborhood so I can take him out for a short and quick walk around the block, out to get the mail with just his collar. But when we go for our daily walks (beach, park etc.) I put his harness on. He doesn't like to put it on, even though he knows he is going out. I have to tell him to sit, then i have to go to him and put it on him. After he has it on, he runs along the furniture and rubs (trying to get it off i guess!! lol) But then he lets me put his leash on and out we go. I have tired to give treats to make him come to me, but this works the best. We LOVE the step-in silk harness that Chattiesmom makes. They are great and they don't matt his hair. Linda

| I don't know how to help you, because my guys love their harnesses. All I have to do is pull them out, and their jumping up and down. Good luck retraining him.

| Hi Moosie's Mom. Your dog sounds a lot like Buddy. He rolls on the ground when i put it on him and take it off. i guess he is till a puppy. It feels like we've had him forever. If he know we are going out he will sit..but like 3 ft away from me and the second I go toward him he'll run. Even with a treat in my hand! I hope it will all fall into place..more practice with obedience in general and hopefully he'll like his puppia. So far so good. Thanks for the harness recommendation. Although it is silk (We keep buddy in a puppy cut because my Husband is allergic) hair is not the issue . I think it's all the buckles that bother him . I imagine you can relate because your dog is on the larger side too..the smallest harness was too small and the next size up i had to adjust it so much the buckles fell right under his armpits. The puppia has one buckle only and it is a bit smaller and fall further up. I guess he's still a baby . We don't keep his regular collar on..the one we were walking him in..but a break away one with his id..again my kids..fear of them yanking. Perhaps as he gets older and my kids too that may be an idea fro quick outings..to keep it on all the time. Well off to the shelter to donate more harnesses and collars !!! Thanks |

| For the longest time I had to "hide" his harness to get close to him! If he saw it, he would run away. He is better now. Like I said earlier, I tell him to sit and he will stay and let me put it on him. (but I must say, he doesn't like me putting it on him. ) I tried to give him treats to come to me, but NO doing! Cindy (chattiesmom) sizes the harness to fit them.

| I have never used a harness or collar. I use vests? or dresses.(sorry for the boys) She has a harness that I tried once but she didnt like all that well. The vests just easier to velcro on and I have never had her break out of it. It takes awhile to get use to because some of the rings are farther back and for awhile I kept pulling her behing off the floor. I attached a picture. I think!!

| vests Hi, thanks for your input. We have a vest like that that is fleece for the cold winter. He is so stubborn when he has that on he will not even walk! He does the whole we shall overcome passive resistance thing. Maybe because it's not an all the time thing. At any rate he'll just have to get used to it because I'm not feeling great about the collar. We walk him at least 3x a day ..we live in a New England old fishing type village and walk everywhere..esp. this time of year. It gets frustrating having to coax a dog out of hiding.. We're on our way though..thanks everyone for listening! |

| My furbabies go nuts with excitement when I get their harnesses and leashes out, they know we are going for a walk. They get so excited I can't get them on fast enough, they run around the house like crazy little doggies till I get their leashes attached and then out the door we go. Have you tried the step in harnesses that are attached to a leash, it's all one piece? Maybe this will work, so that your furbaby doesn't see 2 different items coming at him. Good Luck! |

| our trainer (and our vet agrees) that collapsed trachea's are from small little collars. if you get one that around 1.5 inches wide or 2 inches wide, you should be fine. These are really hard to find in small sizes, but some people will custom make them for you

| Ya, i can see a wider collar being safer. I was also told a martingale collar would be a safer choice also because it kinda has a shock absorber effect with the double loops |
