walking on collar and leash Hi all. I posted last week asking if anyone walked their dog on a collar and got some great answers. My yorkie is 9/10 mo and 9.5 lbs and hates his harness ( I've tried 2 brands) In training him to walk in heel we used a collar and he walks beautifully in heel . I decided to switch but of course was concerned with collapsing trachea even though my dog doesn't pull and is on the hefty side for a yorkie. He is a dream to walk with on the collar. He will not go near me or the harness the minute he sees it. I did a lot of research on the whole thing and decided to change my mind. It didn't sit well with me the even slightest possibility that I may be putting Buddy in harms way. (By the way he is my dog .not baby that I LOVE to pieces....we treat him like a full size dog..no outfits and no one carries him .which may be also why I wanted the collar) I guess collapsing trachea is a hot issue with Yorkies and so is the wearing of harnesses on dogs. Even if Buddy doesn't have it here is what made up my mind..beside the fact no one said it is absolutely safe..not that the harness would prevent it but someone suggested if you have a history of bad backs in your family ..but you don't have a bad back..would it be wise to wear high heels every day? At Anyrate here is my new question..I am now trying the puppia soft harness. It is totally different looking and I just got it yesterday. How do I get him to have a positive attachment to it? I gave him lots of hotdogs bits the first time I tried it on him. Now he won't take them ( He never takes treat when he is in his harness..like he is mad at me) How do I get him to come to me so I can put it on w/out a treat since that's not working. ( Again we do not corner him and pick him up..respectful like a big dog..(Not trying to be judgemental for those of you who do but my kids are 8 6 and 3 and we didn't want them to injure him when we first got him so made that the house rule ..snuggling on the bean bag is a.o.k.!) I just feel there is an opportunity to start all over..Help! |
