We have trained for either/both. That way we can leave for extended periods without worrying, but they also like to go outside. But I think it sometimes seems easier to potty train outside because ANYWHERE they go outside is a good spot. Whereas in the house, we want them to go in this little square foot area. It's harder to get it right!! We have won with Coby (5 months) but for a short while we had to either boundary him onto his puppy pad or use a leash when I knew he had to go. He did learn that he didn't get to leave until he went potty. Now, we're branching out into the other rooms of the house. But I think the easiest way to potty train is to make it nearly impossible to make a mistake. That makes the entire experience positive for both of you. We have a 10 year old that still demands a treat every time he potties whether it's inside or outside!!

I pad trained Jake because I got him in the fall and didn't want to take him out in the cold over the winter. It works well for me because he caught on so fast and has had very few accidents. I guess it depends on everyone's preference. But, I found pad training to be very easy. I was lucky.

I pad trained Cali and Pixie as it was easier when first training them, but the down side to me is they never get use to holding it for any length of time and Pixie thinks the whole house is a pee pad, where as if I had trained her to go outside I may have had fewer accidents.

Thank you for all you're help. Megan is finally going potty on the potty pad
But will not poo on it. she goes on the carpet. I've tried putting it (poo) on the paper but she tries to eat it. she just won't poo on the paper. I've only had her a week so am I trying to hurry things?

Thumbs up

Hi again,
I sent you a pm on your other question. And I just read your new post where you said you'd already tried putting some of the poo on the paper. If she is eating it, it's called Coprophagia and is really common in puppies. There are several reasons for it. One is something missing in the diet, but I'm sure that's not the case with your Megan. My older dog did that when he was a puppy. Here's a link to some info on it.... http://perfectpaws.com/copro.html. There are several products you can buy at the petstore to stop that. Just search on coprophagia (or "eating feces").

Just don't get in a hurry and don't get frustrated. It will seem like a long time during it. But if you stick with it, you'll have over 10 years of a wonderful life with your Megan without having to worry about housebreaking!!

Good luck and keep everyone posted.

Mine are trained to go outside. Well, Sammy is almost trained. I'm not an expert on pee-pads, but we don't have a fence so I take my dogs outside on leashes. That means I watch them do their thing. Every time, every day... They like to sniff around and find the perfect spot to poop. Both of them shuffle back and forth several times before they finally go. I cannot imagine trying to get them to go ON a pad. They would miss every time. They would probably pee on one, but then the whole house is game. When either of them have an accident it is on the carpet.

They are crated when we are not home, but our schedules allow one of us to be home most of the time. Working, but home to let them outside. That way we don't come home to any accidents, and they get rewarded for going in the right place!

We have pad trained but when we are out Buzz will go outside also. You must stay by the pad and use the Good boy Good Girl when the smelling starts on the pad. That will help puppy to stay on it and go on it.

This may seem odd , but I started outside then paper trained them. The reason I did the paper thing is cuz when it is raining outside they have a set mind that "There is NO WAY they are going to get Wet" They will sit right by the door. To funny

The trick to getting them to go outside in the rain is going with them. Sometimes I only have to stand on the porch, but sometimes I really do have to go with them. Loki is very good about it now, Sammy not so much...

Max does both. I walk him in the house - meaning that I call him in and show him his peepee treats every few hours, he pees on his pad, gets his treats, and everybody is happy. He'll go on his pad on his own also. He also likes to pee outside, especially in the snow! Poop - well - if he gets close to the paper, he gets a treat. He doesn't seem to get that even if you circle, you have to end up with your butt on the paper.

LOL - what is it about Yorkies? They just can't seem to squat and go like other breeds. They circle, walk back and forth, circle again - all of which makes it very hard to land with their butts facing the right direction over the paper. Coby does VERY well, but it's ridiculous to watch!

They're very busy dogs!. I'll watch Max sometimes when I send him to his paper to pee. Ir's so funny.

If he smells something near the door, he has to walk over. If I have a box or a bag near the door, he has to go see what it is. I think he forgets why he went to the paper in the first place! I shake the treat bag and remind him.

I think pooping simply takes way too long to hold his attention, and am lucky he actually remembers to stay near the paper. Maybe something shiny catches his eye while he's doing his little circles.

Gotta love them!
