| New to YT! Puppy question! Hi Everyone!! My name is Jenn and I am new to Yorkie Talk! Actually I have to admit I have been a lurker for a while, but now I have finally worked up the courage to post, LOL. We have a Yorkie girl named Lacey. We are in the process of getting a little boy We have never had two dogs before, so this will be a whole new experience. I have a question. What is the best thing to do with a puppy at night? Would it be best to keep him in the crate? Or let him roam around in a room? Or in your bed? I guess alot is trial and error.. but any advice you guys can give would be awesome. Thank you guys so much!!! Jenn |

It's a Yorkie Thing Donating Member | Welcome to YT! I have a Lacie and a little boy Gizmo. I can't tell you what is best, but mine both sleep with me. Lacie is 5 months and Gizmo 3 months. I got Gizmo at 9 weeks old and just got Lacie last week. We spend all our time together when I'm home. GOOD LUCK and maybe someone else knows BEST. Dawn

| Such a dilemma! Higgins is trained to sleep in his crate at night so that he will not make any pees and poops. Don't know WHY he isn't night trained by now....we've tried everything. HOWEVER, DH Don The Dog Hater*, just can't stand to be separated from his boy all night and usually sneaks Higgs right into the bed.....then quietly picks after him in the morning. And when we are traveling in the motorhome, he sleeps with Don and NEVER makes a mistake in the RV. Go figure. *Don never had a puppy or dog in his 68 years on earth and did NOT want one. It took Higgins a whole 15 minutes to completely ensnare the old man. Now Don looks at me and says "Never make me choose, my dear!" He is completely devoted to our little one. Wherever he sleeps at night, you should still crate train him. It is so important! Higgs likes to travel in his crate.....feels more secure....and he is. And a great big WELCOME to YorkieTalk! | WELCOME ! Wherever you feel is right for your puppies would be my answer - it depends on what you want yourself. My three are in the bed ! Me, my hubby, Tara, goes underneath for about half an hour, then she goes on top, Casper, hugs my hubby's side, and Tammy, sleeps over his bald spot on his head ! You don't ever crush them, but they are a pest if you want closeness with your partner, lol ! I love having mine in bed though - they never have accidents, and are just like your babies ! Luv Debra x x x x Pics - my three......Tara 7 / Tammy 4 / Casper 4.5 |

| Welcome to YT. I think whatever you decide is fine, I mean a crate, their own bed or your own. If you let them have their say, I'm pretty sure they'll choose your bed. I've got two yorkies, Rubi and Jennie and a cat, Mimosin and they sleep on my bed (well, whenever Rubi lets Mimosin). The most important thing is to start doing what you intend to maintain in the future. That is, it's a lot of hard work to get a dog , say from your bed, once he's used to sleeping there. The best of luck. Rubi, Jennie and pussy cat Mimosin |

| One of the best ways to housebreak a dog is to crate train them & that includes placing them in the crate at night. This presents accidents & gives the pup a sense of security. I adopted my 2 yorkies and they had not been crate trained, so I use a baby gate at night & when I am gone to give them there own room - actually to keep them close to the peepad! |

| Welcome. It's obviously a personal choice, but since you're asking, you must be looking for ideas or different opinions. I love hearing what other people do. I have a 10 year old that sleeps with me (Reggie) and a 5 month old that sleeps in the crate an arm's length away from me on the floor beside the bed (Coby). Here's what I've done. It's easier to housetrain if they sleep in a crate. You never have to look for accidents, and there's no chance of them revisiting a secret spot if there isn't one. Then when they're becoming trustworthy in the house unattended, you can start training them to sleep in the bed with you if you want. I did this by going to bed early (before I was really ready to sleep) and bringing Reggie to bed with me. If he laid down, fine, but if he was playing around and wanting to get off the bed, he went directly to his crate to bed. We did this for weeks. Eventually he learned that if he settled, he got to stay, but as soon as he wanted to play or get off the bed, he went in the kennel. By now, of course he can get up and down as he chooses. But when it's lights out in the house, he's the first one in the bed and the last one out. I can't wait until Coby is ready!!! (Remember that one of the secrets of housebreaking while forgiving the accidents, is trying hard to avoid even the opportunity to fail!!) Best of luck. Let us know what you decide and how you do it!!

| My lil one (6mths old) sleeps in her bed in the xpen in the kitchen. I would love to have her upstairs with me in bed, but I want to be sure she is completely potty trained (we're still working on it) before I let her in bed with me...

| I guess it depends on what is good for you. Jake sleeps with my hubby and me, and we love it! When the puppy is really young, it's probably a better idea to keep them in a crate until they're better at potty training. I would keep the crate in the same room so that the puppy can see you. Or, you can gate off a small area or use an expen and keep their bed or crate in it. Or, you can keep them in your room and let them sleep in their own bed. Whatever works best for you!

| Welcome to YT! I have a Lacy!! She slept in her crate until she was about a year old..it took me almost that long to completely potty train her (I didn't know what I was doing...) so I was afraid she'd jump off during the night and pee somewhere. When I did start letting her sleep with me I would wake up several times to see if she was still on the bed and she was..she has now been sleeping in the bed with me for two years and has been perfect

| AFter reading this yesterday and telling you how I did it, I couldn't resist trying Coby last night. I went to bed a little early (because I don't want to fall asleep during my "training period") and put his leash on. I just kept him near me and tried to keep him laying down. He didn't do "too" bad. But then my husband came to bed and Coby thought it was BIG PLAY TIME. So he had to go to his kennel right beside the bed and he went right to sleep. So I think it's a little too soon, but I couldn't resist!!

| Welcome to YT! When we 1st brought Emma home we kept her in a small kennel @ night and put it right beside our bed she only whined a few times and quickly learned that we were right there with her and she has slept all night since then. I was always afraid to let her roam the house @ night someone might get up half asleep and step on her so she still sleeps in her x-pen @ night.

| I have heard it is best to crate at night, but I will admit Gypsy sleeps with us. Hubby and I both love it though he will not admit it. And WELCOME!
