I am a newbie yorkie owner myself, I got my first one june 05 and he died in Sept 05 :( so these guys (dex & fletch) are REALLY my only experience! They are fun and fiesty! They are small guys who think they are MASSIVE! All I can recommend is read read read and ask your questions here! I have realized how LUCKY I was when I got my boys! I had NO idea about luxating patella (sp?) and low blood sugar and collapse tracchea and sooooo many other things! I was VERY lucky the breeder I choose had some healthy pups! I did have a scare, my Dex had a heart murmur that was still there after 6 months, my vet was nervous and we almost went for a echocardiogram to see if he needed surgery and then by his first year checkup, it was gone thank god! Anyways, you are in good hands here! You'll learn all you'll need to know! The women and men here are THE BEST!! | I'm really sorry about your little one who passed away. I'm glad you have your other two babies to love :)
I had read about collapsed trachea so when we got the pup, I got him a couple of harnesses instead of a collar. I read about low blood sugar too, so I make sure that he eats often. But I have no idea what luxating patella is.
It's comforting to know that the people here are so knowledgeable.
There are some things I'm wondering about. When we got him, we were told not to exercise him too much because it's not good for his bone development. Is this true? So we don't really let him walk around much. We take him outside but only let him walk a few feet and then carry him. He get all of his exercise running around the house and playing with his toys and my boyfriend. We took him to the park once and the kids kind of scared him. They were trying to play with him, but he didn't like them moving so quickly towards him and making a lot of noise. So we try to stay away from kids now, although I worry that this will cause him to be not socialized enough with children.
Also I was wondering abut when to have him neutered. I've heard from some people to not wait past 5 months but other have said after 6 months. |
