I think I just bought a puppy mill Pup :(
 

Has anyone here heard of Phil Gaidy or Doreen Deketelaere? I bought a male Yorkie pup from a man named Phil Gaidy about a week ago. He is located in Nobleton Ontario. I paid $1200 for the 10 week old pup. He had originally asked for $1400 on the phone and when I went to see the puppy, he said $1300. I told him I only had $1200 to spend and he went for it.

I was told on the phone that the pup would grow up to be about 2.5 lbs. Then when I got to the breeder's place, he brought me out two males to choose from and wouldn't let me in the house. His house stank really badly and I saw some dogs in cages through the door. I asked him if he kept his dogs in cages and he said that they liked to be confined to their crates throughout the day. I picked one of the pups and this time he told me that the pup would grow to be 3 lbs. I asked to see the mom and dad and he said that they were both away being bred at the time and showed me a couple of pictures on printer paper. :mad:
He also told me on the phone that the puppy would be micro chipped, but didn't mention anything about it when I got there. I asked him to guarantee that the dog wouldn't be more than 3 lbs and he said that he would guarantee that it wouldn't be more than 4 lbs.

Even though this guy sounded fishy, the puppy looked so tiny and I thought that at the worst possibility, I would be saving a little dog from a bad breeder.

The next day I took the puppy to my vet and she said it would grow to be 6 or 7 lbs and maybe even more. I called the breeder and told him that I had paid him for a 3 lbs dog and not a 7 lbs one. He told me he could get me a smaller teacup dog next weekend. I asked him how many litters he has in a year and he said about 16! :confused:

I'm not sure what to do now. I like my puppy and he is a cute, seemingly healthy little fellow, but my heart was set on a much smaller dog. But I don't want to exchange him for a smaller one either because that would mean giving him back to a possible puppy mill and who knows what will happen to him.

Can anyone give me any advice or ideas as to what I should do?

If I were you I would ask this man for my money back.

Size cannot be guarantee. Not even a good breeder can guarantee you the final weight of the pup. I mean, you can look at the parents size to have an idea, but they can always be exceptions.
And as far as the pup, I don't know what to tell you. You already have him with you, so now it's your decision. If you hadn't got it yet, I would say cancel the buy, because it really seems like it's a puppymill and you can get a pup from a reputable breeder for that amount of money. If you are already in love with the pup, you can take this as a lesson for next time, if you want to get another yorkie, or just to give advice to other people.

If I asked him for my money back, he would probably want the dog back and I don't feel comfortable giving him back the puppy because who knows what he will do with it. And I'm not sure I want to keep a puppy that is going to be about 7 or 8 lbs either. I've been trying to find him another home, but no luck so far. I'm not sure what to do. :(

I am sorry he seems to have put one over on you and I hope that you get your money back if that is what you want..but I don't understand when people see these HUGE red flags..like won't show you parent's, won't let you see where the puppy is kept, etc. that people go for it... I was looking high and low for a female pup a few years ago and came across a lady who had a dirty house, lots of dogs/pups in the house and was giving a "discount" on a litter if I bought one right there and then...I said NO THANKS and sure I felt bad for those pups, even sorrier for the people who purchased them as they probably were going to end up with something they did not have their hearts set on as well as possible vet bills.

Please..don't take me wrong, I don't mean to put YOU down.. it's just heartbreaking that these people did this to you and will do it to others:(

The puppy will be 11 weeks old in a coupe of days and he is weighing in at 1 lbs and 14 oz. right now. So 30 oz. in total. He has gained 6 oz. in the last week. How much do you think he will weigh when full grown? Maybe my vet is wrong.

I went through the same thing you are going through now, with Ichabob 7 yrs ago instead fo a puppy mill she call herself breeder / puppy finder, Ich weigh in at 15lbs, when I call her and told her how large he was at 11/2 she told me to send him back and she would exchange him, He was my baby no way was I sending him back and she knew this, when it was 5 he became a diebetic and was on 2 shots a day. Ich was a beautiful smart yorkie and I wouldn't have never sent him back, my second time around I found a breeder that just bred yorkies, 1yr health, I saw the mom and dad and she let me see her kennels. wicket is 6mos and weighs 3lbs 7oz. he was check by 3 vets after I got him.

A standard Yorkie is 7lbs and under, how small do you want your pup to be?
I am sorry you may have been taken but if your pup is standard and healthy
what else could you ask for?
Usually if you take the weight at 3months old and double it and add 1lb
that is a close estimate of the adult weight. Yours looks like it might
hit 7lbs which is standard.

i'm sorry this has happened to you. i would concentrate on wether or not you have bonded with this pup...is the pup healthy? honestly, weight doesn't matter if you love him and he is healthy. maggie will probably hit 6 lbs and i have to tell you...she is TINY. so just because your boy MIGHT get 6 or 7 lbs, he is still going to very small. i wouldn't turn him away for his size. you are probably better off getting a bigger one anyway, as so many of the smaller ones tend to have more health problems. there are MANY perfectly healthy teeny ones but there is just so much more to worry about. it is horrible that you feel like you have been taken advantage of, but you have the pup now. I would try to get my money back, or at least some of it, but if he won't budge without you giving the pup back, you will have a very difficult decision. it is a very hard one to make. you don't want to support the "puppy mill" but you also dont want to give that pup back in fear of what might happen to him. i personally would keep him, love him, and if you ever decide to get another yorkie, do more research. you really can't put all of the blame on the breeder...YES...he did a very bad thing. but the reason he did it and the reason he will continue to get away with it, is because people let him. they don't look at all of the signs. they get taken by a cute pup...and that's that.

i'm sorry if that offends you, that is NOT my intention. but honestly, that is how these guys stay in business. they play the heart strings very well.

good luck on your decision. if I could, i would take your pup and give him a great home. but i'm maxed out :)

I can't believe thats hes breeding the puppies again, isn't it too soon? Also, he just wants money out of these pups! I think you spent too much money, bc if someone is asking that price they come with papers, let you see the parents, etc. I don't know if he will give you your money back, unless there is somehting wrong with the dog. And I wouldn't return the dog, just because you think that it could possibly be from a puppy mill. If the dogs healthy, then I wouldn't worry!

according to the chart if hes 11 weeks and 1.14 he should be 4.8 pound full grown so around 5 pounds. But remember that is not always the case they do tend to be bigger or even smaller. the chart doesnt work for everyones dog all dogs are different. With my puppy it has been right so far

The first red flag to me would of been you cannot see the parents because they are off being bred, hello.. Females only come in heat every 6 months or even more with the smaller breeds so that was a FLAT out lie right there. And then the cages you should of ran.. BUT the deed is done I say if you are not attatched to the puppy find it a home because you will most likely resent *sp* it because it is not what you originally wanted.

I have to tell you that in my search, I too wanted 'tinies'.
At 13 weeks TJ was 1.8 lbs
At 6 months Roxy was 2.5 lbs

Now TJ is 2.5 years old and weighs aprrox. 6.8 to 7 lbs
Roxy is a little over 2.5 years old and weighs 5 lbs

They are BOTH the perfect size for me! They are still small, but big enough that I don't fear for their lives. If I ever have children, they are a good size for children to learn to be gentle and careful.

Again, the 'tinies' are cute as a button, my I THANK GOD EVERYDAY, that my two actuallt grew (hahahaha)

Sorry you didn't get what you had hoped for.. but wow, that's really sad that you want to get rid of "it" (as you put it), because you believe it is going to be a whopping 7 or 8 pounds- which isn't even that big. Sometimes 7 or 8 lb dogs don't even look any bigger than my 4 and 5 lbers.

I am glad I get to compare Wicket with your Roxy. I didn't want a real small yorkie I was hoping for 6 to 7 lbs, or maybe a little larger, we have 2 labs and a jack russell terrier, I was afraid he wouldn't make 5lbs. I feel better thanks,

I'v heard the rule of thumb is double the weight at 12 weeks and that is their weight full grown (supposably)

that means u kinda fell into the trap and got caught. He swindles you out of your money, Yes u saved on dog, but funded him to breed 10 more to sell.

If you look at the link to the chart I posted, that is how it works out as well. I just like the fact that the chart covers every single week.


According to the chart posted, mine should be a little over 4 pounds. I did see her parents and they were very small - 3 pounds and 5 pounds.

I know others say the chart isn't accurate, but who knows.

Oh, yes I have that chart but I found it to be a little more accurate to double the weight at 12 weeks, but like you said "who knows", lol :)

Look TJ was 1.8 at 13 weeks - So, if I doubled that...3.6 lbs - Yeah Right :eek:

Try 1.8 x 4 = 7.2 lbs.

It really all depends. TJ is muscular. He could lose a tiny bit, I think he is good at 6.3 or 6.5 ;)

Iam sorry you feel like you were decieved:( but if you love and bonded with this pup already and if he is healthy, why not keep him, all 4 of my furkids are different weight, smallest is at 1.5 to almost 8pds of pure yorkie love:) can we see pics of your new addition:) oh and welcome to yt:)

The chart does say that doubling the weight at 12 weeks yeilds the final weight so I am not sure how it is more accurate since it says exactly what you are saying. :confused:

The chart goes beyond that and gives you a weekly breakdown as well which is helpful if you are past the 12th week or before the 12th week.

How big were the parents?

Size does not determine if you can love the puppy.
I bought mine here on YT and with the chart he'll be about 6 lbs. But I was told mom was 5 and dad was 4. So I'll wait and see.
If he ends up being 4#-Ok
If he ends up being 5#-OK

I have to agree. I was told Susanah would be 5 - 6 pounds and according to the chart she will be. But I would still love her just as much whether she weighs 4 pounds or 40 pounds! She is still my Susanah Banana Poopanut! :D
