Anyone that I might trust to keep her would be at the FH and our Dr. Lucy, who always wants to keep her, was 45 minutes away ... I just scooped her up, grabbed a little blankie and took her with me. She is almost like an accessory on me anyway and anyone that mattered wouldn't think a thing about it ... and they didn't! The few family members who barely spoke to me anyway and showed disdain for Toto does it all the time .... the only one who truly mattered was my Mother and I knew I was doing exactly what she would have wanted me to do.

The next day when her Pastor met me at the church, the first words he said to me was "Where's Toto?" ... he loves her too and sees her often. I suppose it depends on the circumstances and the people involved as to whether you take Susanah with you ... I personally wouldn't think anything of it. I didn't spend that much time in the room with my Mother ... it was filled with bitter, guilt ridden people who spent very little time with her the last few years when she needed them most. I, on the other hand, spent as much time as I possibly could and tried to make excuses for the ones who didn't. I have no remorse and wouldn't change anything I did.

If it wasn't for all the yorkie thefts and that creepy man I would not even consider taking her.

I live in a 20-unit townhouse complex. There is this young guy about 23 always asking me how my dog is. He asked me if I wanted to sell her. I switched the subject and kept walking. it can be border line disrespectful to bring your dog to a place of mourning. If the deceased had some kind of a relationship and or bond with the dog and the family requested it then by all means bring the dog. Im not trying to be mean but I would not even have the thought in my head to bring my yorkie to a funeral home, its no place to bring your dog.

Graleyne ... good decision!! Had I that option, that's the one I would've gone with too! I totally understand both sides of this and under normal circumstances would never have handled it the way I did. I often stay home with Toto rather than have to leave her alone and the thing that makes me feel really good ... Patrick usually opts to stay home with us!!

Thank you Deborah and Judy ... I would have loved to be snugged up with my Mother & Toto in her den watching old AMC John Wayne movies all day on a Saturday! We did that a lot and although some of them were "new" to her ... I would always smile to myself and tell her "this does look like a good one" and watch "The Sons of Katie Elder" again!!

Amy Tam said she takes her two Yorkies to the White House and no one knows they are with her.. in a purse type carrier, who would know?..and when I die, I everyone to bring their dogs to the funeral! The more barking and yapping there is, the happier I will be...why should death be any different then life?

I, too, think this is the best suggestion. Taking a dog to a viewing may well be construed as disrespectful by many.

I snuck my Brutus into the hospital when my Mom was dying; he was the ONLY one that could make her smile. Didn't occur to me to take him to the funeral. If I were you, though, I'd be looking to move away from the crazy neighbor. I know, there are no guarantees. But ewwww.

I think the suggestion of going in to view one at a time between you and your hubby would be a good idea!! Especially if you don't want to leave her home. Its usually just to pay respects and that way both of you can do that and Toto will be safe too!!!...On a side note..When i leave this earth my service will probably be a hoot!! I want my dog there and my other friends with their doggies and I do on site balloon decor too and I want balloons all over !!!!

I haven't read the other posts so don't know their thoughts but mine is this,
be yourself and do what your heart leads you to do. I think your husbands best friend would agree and if it were me I would take it.

I'm sure with all the TLC that you have given her she will be fine. Ours loves a blankie and is always quite and snuggling in our arms IMO do what your heart leads you to do.

I just asked my hubby Jack if he would take her and his comment, "Sure I would." So both of us feel it would be fine.

WElllll.....at the risk of flaunting my tackiness......we did take Max to my MIL's funeral. He is very well behaved and was zipped up in his carrier; most people didn't know he was there; they thought it was my purse. He slept thru the entire thing. Had we had someone to babysit, we would have done it, but we had driven 10 hours away from home and anyone that we knew was at the funeral, so there wasn't anyone to take care of him.
Since it was my MIL and I'm married to her one son, and there is only his brother, who didn't mind us bringing Max, I think our "tackiness quotient" was rather a moot subject. And my MIL would have LOVED to have Max there anyway.

I would not however, take him to anyone else's funeral or the funeral home.

Awww ... so sorry to hear about your mother. But this is a really beautiful story.

Your circumstances are very different in that your mother and Toto had a relationship and it would almost have been wrong to not have her there. I know if it were me, my mother would want her "babies" involved, too!
