Pepper spray sounds like a good idea that way it will only temporarily blind them so you can get away and also if you had a bat, you might end up hitting the dog to hard and hurting it and that would open a can of worms you probably would rather avoid. Good luck with everything!!

well nothing close as we live in a small town outside of a major city.. but i think when the heat goes down SIGNIFICANTLY (we've had 90+ with the humidity) we are going to go to antoher small town about 30 min away where they have a great park!! Layla loves the birds and chipmunks and other dogs and the sticks.. lol.. i can't wait to take her!!

I know what it is like living in a large dog neighborhood. It seems that everywhere we turn we see or hear these guys barking their heads off and lunging at us in full force when we walk by. Just the other day my hubby was walking Doogan in front of me and Sedrick and we could hear these two dogs barking and barking and barking but we could not see them then all of a sudden the screen on the window of this house comes flying out and out jumps not one but two dogs onto the 2nd story roof of this house!! One of the dogs was stupid enough to actually jump off the roof and run toward Doogan only to get a swift kick to the side of the head. I'm sure nothing was hurt but his pride because he ran off only to torment his co-partner who would not leave the roof. Poor little Doog was a bit skittish after that and only wanted to be carried so what started out as a nice Sunday morning walk was quickly ruined. Hubby has now said that he too will start carrying a metal baton because you never know when danger will strike and he vows to go to whatever measure necessary to protect our little men.

That sucks! I'm lucky my neighborhood is rather ''small dog friendly'', there is a maltese across from me, a bichon on one side of me, a dog that looks like ''Eddie" from "Frasier" and I usually see atleast one other yorkie walking. I'd def limit the furbaby to walks in an enclosed backyard or in the house if there are big dogs roaming around the neighborhood.

I know it sounds funny to carry a bat but it has come in handy. One time a loose dog was approaching us and I swung the bat and he went the other directon. We also have a couple of very vicious dogs that are behind old poorly kept up old chain link fences. If one of them got out not only would I fear for my dogs lives I would fear for mine. I think people who own dogs who could be vicous should be required to provide adequate fencing. Now I have chain link fencng in the front too but its good fencing with a support beam on top of the fencing for support.

I carry pepper spray all the time. It's too hot to walk my dogs now, but when I do, I carry it. I walk for exercise at the local mall and I always carry my pepper spray. I keep it in my hand at the mall and in my pocket otherwise. I don't keep it in my purse if I'm somewhere I might need to use it. If you need it, you won't have time to fish it out of your purse, so carry it in your hand if you're going to carry it and aim for the eyes if you have to use it. I'm a "mature" woman and I don't go into harm's way with my dogs. I couldn't protect the two of them and myself. There is a walking track at the local civic center and I take them there when it isn't too hot. I am always aware of who's around and always carry my pepper spray.

The worst we run across are they really freaking annoying little dogs that have an electric fence installed in their yard.

It's not worked a couple times though, as they've come right near us barking their little heads off at our Yorkie.

If that dog would have attacked our dog, you would have been told just how far it's possible to punt a little dog.
